REVIEW NUMBER 301 v1.1

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my 301th review. ;D

I decided to review too, because i felt like reviewing today. yay. pointless information. :) ;D!
Well, let me get started.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
Yay. Better what we usually see from you, WINNER.
I like about the eyecandy in this level. It looks good. Too bad that there isn’t much of it. there’s clouds on layer 2 or 1, but those move way too fast, which looks kind of annyoing. background should fade to various colors too, it would give this level a better atmosphere. Ammo placement is fine for me, and i really have no complaiments. Gameplay and flow could be better. there should be more suckertubes, and float ups. running on this level is kind of annyoing because there’s dead ends, and places which need blue springs. yay. this review is gonna be a long one. \o/

GAMEPLAY AND FLOW:
I don’t like the flow at all in this level. some areas are way too small, and there’s stupid stuff in my way, when i try to run. The grey pillar in 62,49 for example. i don’t see any reason why its sitting there. It kinda ruins the flow. Same with the area around 55,57. It desperately needs a sucker tube. same with 89,54. that place is kind of weird. Its there for no reason. Well, it needs a sucker tube, so flow would be better. ;P
The area around 89,24 is annoying too.
Well. You run, and then you hit your head to clump of ground in 89,15. btw, i really don’t like hitting my head into things like that. besides, it needs a spring, or a sucker tube, which would lead you to 87,7, and blaster powerup. Add a red spring to 14,10 and gameplay will improve. when you run, you end to the wall there, and then you have to jump, which costs time. or then add a sucker tube. whatever. 2,48 needs a spring, so you can go to upper parts of the level without having any problems with time. ;P
Btw, what is the purpose of the hole in 1,28?
its the one of the best gameplay/flow ruiners in this level. or something. ;P
2,55 needs a sucker tube, which would lead you to up. ;D
27,61 is kind of annyoing place to put a crate, because you get stuck easily there. ;P
Its the one of the worst things in this level, btw.
Well.. more? yes.
why there’s a spring in 26,48?
it has no purpose. if you run to it, you end at the wall in 40,42.
42,61 and 47,61 need an one way event. maybe you should one way all platforms like that, they would made flow better. =D
Im not sure if i mentioned this above, but area around 32,29 needs a float up, and so does 29,23.
Pros: Well, i’ve seen worse.
Cons:Annyoing places without purpose, which ruin the flow.

EYECANDY AND TILESET USE:
One of the best things in this level. let me start. Author used mostly regular
ground tiles, or then ground tiles with which look boring. Nice to see, that there’s other eyecandy tiles though, like trees, rocks, iCeD rules/SSF signs, and other things like that. kewl.
You used different colored and sized block tiles too, which can look extremely boring, when used wrong. Well, you used different sized blocks, and that gives quite nice result, or atleast in my opinion.
Rock tiles where used too. mostly in area around 82,26. Block tiles were used in 82,16, and somewhere else too, i can’t really remember where. There’s some foreground eyecandy too, like cave tiles, i can’t remember where they were, and im not really sure were those on layer 2 or 1 or 3, but whatever. ;P
there’s some other eyecandy too, like clouds, but their movement annoys me, and so does the transparency, which will reveal an eyecandy bug in area around 69,7. Background eyecandy is very good, there’s some mountains in layer 6 and 7, which would give a good atmosphere, if textured background would fade into various colors. too bad it doesn’t since it kinda ruins the atmosphere. ;P
I guess that’s about the eyecandy. ;D
Pros: Quite nice eyecandy here.
Cons: Some tilebugs, annyoing clouds. ;P

PLACEMENT:
Hmm. interesting. Let me start from the powerups. there’s 4 Powerups in this level, i think. many PU’s are covered by foreground eyecandy, like blocky cave tiles. you said getting optical illusion, too bad that i didnt see any, or then i just didnt concentrate. whatever. there’s some ammo packs lying on the ground. i kinda like it, so ammo is easy to collect, and you don’t have to jump much. Powerups are nicely chosen too, and i really can’t find complaiments about placement. there’s 2 carrots, which are kind of easy to grab, and its a good thing. yay. my review is finally finished.
Btw, whats that Rf crate doing in that hole in the down of the level? :)))) =D
Pros: nice placement.
Cons: There should be one more carrot.

ORIGINALITY:
I don’t think there’s nothing new in this level. it has standard design and placement, and its boring to play. music file “SECRET.s3m” was kewl choice too, because jj2 musics make me dance. or something. i would say that music choice is very original. and you’re probably first person who used this tileset, expect maybe BlurredD, who made example levels of this tileset. so i would say that this level is quite original or something. yes. it is original. ;D
wow, i probably mde lots of typos. yay me. i never saw this hosted so i dunno if this is fun to play. ;P
But atleast i think it is.
PROS:originality.
CONS:boring to play.

CONCLUSION:
Its average level. maybe little bit over average. who knows. im gonna rate this as 6.7 for the reasons i’ve told you. ;P
DOWNLOAD RECOMMEDATION:Your decision. =P
HOST THIS:I don’t think so.
RATING:6.7

#EDIT1: Added something to my review. ;D

#EDIT2: Added +0.3 points because of the originality. Its your lucky day.

To clear a few things up:

- I made this MIDI using Microsoft GS Wavetable. Strangely, this is the only MIDI library on the sound card that came with my Compaq, which I’m pretty sure is recent.

- The orchestra hit is used at 1:11 because I could not find any instrument that sounded like what it normally does in Tubelectric.

Edit: Sonictth, I am not lying. Are you saying nobody is skilled enough to make a midi conversion such as this, or that Robert Allen wrote Tubelectric? I did give credit to Robert Allen for writing the original Tubelectric, but I myself did write this MIDI conversion.[This review has been edited by Acid]

nice level pack
i think the music sux

and i opened it up with jcs
the first guess for the password was correct
wow how (intelligent) to choose (something random) as password

i think you should change the pass before somebody steals your maps
(Unsupported rating removal edit, password removal edit. Please don’t go around giving out people’s passwords – besides, how is someone going to steal these? Doesn’t essentially everyone have the pack. Anyway, please try to actually review the levels next time. For example, eyecandy, gameplay, design, flow, weapons placement, and some other stuff I’m probably forgetting. ~Violet)[This review has been edited by Violet CLM]

uhh what i mean by stealing is changing stuff in it and call it their maps[This review has been edited by gunout]

Hey a new review by me

;p

Okey lets start. the eyecandy. ther mountain son layer 6 and 7, its good and no commands. i miss some yecandy on layer 5. mayby more eyecandy. the ammo/goodies placemand. Its good the powerups ar hidding and you must get ammo 9, the carrots ar also good placemand. but… i miss some coins and a stupid coin bunny :P that will be better when you get in the Coin Warp some other powerup and fast fire and a carrot ( full or something ;p ). BUGS, i saw some. if you look good at that stone part you must use layer 5 to fix, also let snooz or blurredD or labratkid or firesword BETATEST yor levels. okey the size. its not really bug and the platforms ar’t really good. i miss some tiles in the tileset. anyway i saw a other bug at the top. a walk bug. Okey Others: THER AR DEAD ENDS! use suckertube’s or springs. ther ar many deadends, the rest is ok.

What the crap you guys? This tileset in no way deserves anything above a 7.

The tileset is very small, has hardly any variation of colours in it. While the masking is good enough, the tileset is simply very, very dull.

Most of it consists of very 2d, almost entirely solid one colour blocks, very mez-like only without any texture or variation whatsoever. As you get to the bottom there is more of a 3d side-walk esque thing with, again, almost no variation whatsoever. I don’t see how the flat blocks and the very wide 3d tiles are supposed to fit together. It looks there are tiles that switch between the two, but even together they still don’t look that good. Your example makes good enough use of it. I like the background, but the foreground needs some serious work.

As far as alterations and eyecandy go, there are trees, if they can be called that. You get a brown stick and a green oval, I guess in theory that’s a tree. There are also ‘railing’ like things, which, while it is an okay concept, the railings themselves are merely 1 pixel wide lines. There are also tiles for rain, and a stoplight thing useful for lighting effects. There is no textured background. However, there are a couple building-like tiles which are fairly cool, albeit simplistic. You at least made good use of them in your example level.

There are some animations on here, and while I give you kudos for making them, they aren’t all that interesting or anything.

Look, don’t get me wrong, here, zapS, for a beginner you avoided a lot of common mistakes. The masking is quite well done too. Any tone of sarcasm and annoyance in my review is simply because of the gross overrating we have going on. Your tileset is simply okay. It isn’t bad, but it certainly does NOT deserve an 8.1. That’s the only reason I was inspired to write this, I was very annoyed.

Woah! The compact form of MIDI and the 1337ness of Jazz in one package!

Anyways, review:

Since the MIDI system changes with different computers, sometimes this MIDI will sound rux0r (If, for example, you use a sound card from 1995 (AWE64 FOREVEA!)), and other times, it will sound like complete crap (If, for example, you’re running the Windows XP Midi Mapper). In leiu of this, do NOT use my review as a guide for downloading this MIDI. Only read it for your ameusement ONLY.

Nice job, although at 1:11, the orchestra hit sounded weird and did not follow-through, like the hit in Tubelectric. Also, some of the notes were a note lower or a note higher then usual.

Rating : N/A, for obvious reasons.

Waits for Bjarni to come in and complain that it doesn’t work with JJ2

Nice conversation, and good instrument using. It’s really similar than the original, and it’s a good thing, because it’s just a midi. Yes, I think the begining of this track is a little empty, but it’s by that, because the bass havent got too long sound, and I think this track would be better with a “longer” bass instrument, but it’s only stange in the first few seconds of the track. Oh, and the good thing is, some of the JJ Fan Game makers can easily use this midi in game maker.
Good work, AcId! =)

(I don’t understand, why everybody complaining about non j2b formats. “It can’t works with JJ2…” USE WINAMP! It works with midi and module files too, for listen.)

This level shows much improvement in Bjarni’s level making. It is a little like Party in the Castle, which I think is good because it’s sort of like a sequel.

The ammo placement isn’t very good, and niether is the food placement, but the enemy placement is decent for the most part. A few of the tiles look ugly, but again, it’s pretty good for the most part. The boss is much too hard in the location it’s placed, though.

I don’t think the water disappeared, I think that you reached an underwater “cave” where there wasn’t any water. This was quite a neat thing, Bjarni.

It is possible to play with Jazz in that one area, but I used a secret trick of mine that I will now reveal. I buttstomped the ghosts to get up.

Overall, keep up the good work!

A nice midi. At the 1:12 minute, you hear a sound, that actually doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the song.

After that, it sounds a little strange… And after that, the main sound continues, and that sounds okay.

I don’t really like the beginning of the song, because it just. Stops. Jelze said that already :P

But an nice song.

Stares at the striked text by Cooba Only j2l (level) works xP? Multiple things work. Look at the “JCS” section of j20. JJ2 can use alot more than only j2b ;)

Midi won’t work with levelsw.

I think this is good – it is not just resmpled like other ones, but as said danyjel that annoying “Relax” is bad.It is longer and it isnt so “weary” after on min like other remixes, because it is changing and it is not other bad try.

If you will continue this way, you can be better.

Ok, just let me clear this up: Robert Allen wrote the music for JJ1, Alexander Brandon wrote it for JJ2. First came Robert, then Alex. :p

Whoever thinks this is the very first midi of Jazz Jackrabbit to be released, guess again. www.vgmusic.com has a couple of Jazz midis in the DOS and Windows section (of HH94 bonus, Tubelectric, Medivo and Pezrox). See for yourself :p

Now, a general note about midis: how it sounds like depends on the midi driver you’re using. Each midi driver has its own set of instruments. Change driver = change instruments played in the midi (I’m using Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth).

The midi itself doesn’t sound to bad, tho I’ve heard better. The main problem with this song is that the instrument just… stop in an instant, as in beep. Having them fade out at some places would have been a better choice. Also, the instuments chosen don’t exactly fit the choatic nature of Tubelectric. The melody is intact however, as well as the tempo.

Verdict:
A faithfull adaption of Tubelectric, it’s just a shame it didn’t have better sounding instruments. However it’s a nice try and deserves recognition, considering you don’t see Jazz midi’s all around the web.

- JelZe GoldRabbit =:3

P.S. If there’s anything I can’t stand it’s “I’ll review it later”. What’s the point in saying that? If you’re gonna review it later, then don’t post a review at all!
P.P.S. To all the newbies out there, JJ2 can not play midi’s in-game. You need something like MediaPlayer if you want to hear it.[This review has been edited by JelZe]
