(X1) FOREWORD
___________________________________________________________________________
Lost Ages is a collection of almost 30 levels for Jazz Jackrabbit 1 loosely
tied together by a story, in development since 2011.
These levels represent my first attempt in using the J1E Level Editor for
Jazz Jackrabbit 1. In fact, I literally did not ever open or try using the
program before I started on the Carrotus levels, but I definitely did learn
a LOT along the road to completing this pack, which may or may not be
noticable as you (the player) progress through my lvls. I was inspired to
start after one rainy day I decided to play through Newspazs Mission Spaz:
Foreseeable Future, which opened my eyes to the possibilities of what can
be done using the editor, and what mainly attracted my attention was the
very customizable event system and possibility of importing custom sprites
and graphics. I had a bit of a tough time with the learning curve at the
beginning, and would like to say a thank you to Violet for helping me
understand certain aspects and answering my questions. I never intended to
make so many levels, but I enjoyed the process and they didnt take long to
make (most were made in 1-3 days), so somehow the biggest collection of
levels for JJ1 since the originals was born. Id also like to thank
PurpleJazz for creating the 2015 nominations thread which encouraged me to
finally push these out, else they might have sat on my HD for years to
come.

(X3) General Tips
___________________________________________________________________________
_
Always look around where possible, especially before jumping into
unexplored places.
Some levels have shortcuts or multiple routes, try to find what is the
path of least resistance for you
Use health wisely! Dont waste carrots when you dont need them
Use ammo wisely! Dont hoard ammo when you lose all of it if you die.
Playing on EASY is strongly recommended for first time players
Explore around, theres plenty of secrets abound ;)
TURBO difficulty is not currently supported
Don't forget to DUCK!

(X4) Level Summaries
___________________________________________________________________________
_
Since these levels were an experiment in a time machine to the genesis of
the game that started the Jazz Jackrabbit franchise, it is fitting that all
these levels take place in a time machine, from a lost age a long time ago
to the harsh and unwelcoming future. How our intrepid little green hero
reached these forbidding places is only bound by the limits of your
imagination, though Devan Shell's time machine from the sequel is alluded
to as a likely culprit. Each of the worlds has a bit of a backstory to give
it some life and atmosphere (also to help me make the levels themselves)
================================
Planet 1 : Carrotus (Prehistoric)
================================
These levels take you back to an earlier, prehistoric form of Carrotus
where the rabbits are yet to evolve into the dominant species that they're
destined to be (and never will, if Devan has his way!). Here, lush
overgrowth covers the planet, hungry beasts lurk in the dark and giant
eagles patrol the sky (the feral ancestors to the Hip Hop birds). Legends
speak of large, ferocious reptilian creatures that roamed in time long
forgotten, making a meal out of everything in their paths. Unfortunately
for you, this is the era you find yourself trapped in, so make sure that
meal doesn't become you.
"Into the Garden" contains a super secret near the start
"Prowling Ground" is full of shortcuts, secrets, and the first bonus gem
of the episode.
================================
Planet 2 : Jungrock (Prehistoric)
================================
Deep in the dense greenery of the Carrotus forests there is a portal to an
even greener world. This humid and lush jungle is home to a number of
birds, insects and predators. Even the large network of caverns here are
overgrown with plants and flourishing with life. The oxygen rich atmosphere
has accelerated the growth of many species here, particularly bugs, so
bring some firepower. Somewhere deep in the heart of the jungle, a
mysterious monastery is spreading a deafening silence...
There is lots of hidden launcher ammo in "Welcome to the Jungle" which is
quite useful in situations here
Taking the high path in "Cloud Forest" all the way til the end will open
up the entire map for exploring
================================
Planet 3: Silent Sanctuary
================================
Escaping the humid and deadly jungle, you find a monastery situated high on
a mountaintop. As you approach nearer, the peaceful and sunny atmosphere
becomes slowly enveloped by a gloomy fog. Arriving at the gate of the
monastery you notice how decrepit and old it looks, but as you soon find
out it's far from abandoned. Time seems to stand still in these ancient
halls, only the monastery itself can tell what dark secrets it keeps within
its walls. Shadows seem to cling to everything around you, and disturbing
and ghastly noises echo out from the dark depths of the catacombs beneath,
breaking the eerie and almost total silence.
Who knows what kind of monster lurks in the darkness of the monastery,
making those beastly sounds. It would probably be for the best not to alert
it to your presence...
The deafening silence permeates every part of this sanctuary and the
jungle surrounding it (These maps were built from scratch using the very
first map editor for JJ1. I strongly reccomend building off preexisting
maps and using J1E and J1LES if you want to try making your own maps to
avoid unnecessary hardship)
There's a significant shortcut in the Crypt of Rais close to the
checkpoint and a bonus gem, happy hunting.
================================
Planet 4: Diamondus (Prehistoric)
================================
The ancient past of Diamondus was a time of immense geological upheaval and
volcanic activity. What life clings to these rocks has to be resilient and
fearless. Geysers of lava and plumes of pink smoke drift upwards from the
scorched landscape, polluting the atmosphere. It's a desolate planet in a
constant state of change, but one day it will become lush and full of
diamonds.
DON'T take the leap of faith unless your bunny has more hops than Jordan
There is a secret area here that references the original creator of this
tileset and author of SWAG
================================
Planet 5: Carboniferous
================================
A veritable maze of thick foilage and colossal trees, Carboniferous is a
booming planet with a tremendous variety of animal and plant life.
Unfortunately for you, rabbits are not very high up on the food chain here
and the animals prowling the rainforest will be a constant reminder of that
as they put you in your place. In an alternate future where jackrabbits
have been eradicated and the descendants of Shell rule the world, the
rainforests of this planet have been stripped away long ago, and the planet
left a desolate wasteland in the hunt for more coal and fuel.
Homage to Prehistorik 2. Beware of squirrels!
Did you find the shortcut, airboard, bonus gem or secret level in "That
Tree Level"?
================================
Planet 6: Bloxonius
================================
The citadel of blocks is an impenetrable fortress commanded by one of the 3
guardians, a ruthless no-nonsense military commander who is relentless in
his task of protecting the portal to the future. Inside these walls of
LEGO, he has amassed an impressive army of followers, and will do whatever
it takes to ensure that history stay rewritten and jackrabbits never evolve
to challenge the supremacy of the reptiles. However, there is one ally here
who is willing to help you, if you can find him. He has been in hiding to
evade capture from the reptiles and slowly stashing ammo and goodies to
stage an uprising and overthrow the tyrant general, so that peace can be
restored to this once festive and happy planet.
The FIREWALL can't kill you and sometimes short circuits since it's only
running on 50% power, for now...
Somewhere on this planet is the entrance to the SECRET Dreamlands maps,
happy hunting.
================================
Planet 7: Dreamlands
================================
This secret place is found inside the citadel of blocks and once contained
the happy dreams of children. However, it has been violated by the legions
of troops from the citadel and now serves as a hollow reminder that good
things don't last forever and dreams can easily turn to nightmares...
Don't be in such a hurry to exit "Kadath" that you miss the bonus gem
nearby!
If you're wondering who that Derby guy referenced in the Bloxonius
cutscenes is in the context of this mod, it's the mini-boss here in "Wish
Upon A Star". Gotta tie up the loose ends ;)
================================
Planet 8: Chernobog (Future)
================================
Once upon a time, this was a planet much like Carboniferous and Jungrock.
In the quest for resources and fuel and the great wars that followed, this
planet was scourged by the reptiles and entirely deforested. Now, rivers of
toxic sludge and radioactive fallout are all that remain, along with the
mutated descendants of the once thriving species that lived here.
If you made it this far, you don't need any more tips!
================================
Planet 9: Radeon (Future)
================================
An artificial planet made entirely by the reptiles, this entire planet
served to fuel their war machine as they conquered planet after planet,
producing munitions and advanced weaponry and all manner of sophisticated
technology. Not a single organic lifeform can be found here, until you
arrived that is...
================================
Planet 10: Apocalyptus (Future)
================================
The home planet of the descendants of Devan Shell, it has been completely
transformed into a cybernetic nightmare. Here dwells the final guardian of
the time machine, forever vigilant in protecting the apocalyptic and
dystopian future Devan Shell had created by using the time machine to
exterminate all the ancestors of the jackrabbit species in the distant
past. The cyborg beings that live here view themselves as the godlike
rulers of the galaxy, and punish anything that gets in their way. Abandon
all hope ye who enter...
Since unlike its sequel Jazz1 does not allow level names into headers, I've
included them here so that maps won't be referred by their generic planet
names:
1. Into the Garden (LEVEL0.000)
2. Prowling Ground (LEVEL1.000)

by P4ul of the original Jungle tileset by Epic (for the episode 04 image)
The rest of the sprites are either original Jazz Jackrabbit 1 content, or
modified/created by myself, else I forgot something...
A special thanks goes out to MC Hammer.
There are a few people whom without their efforts this pack would not be
possible.
1. Big thanks to Epic Games (then known as Epic MegaGames) for
developing and releasing the original Jazz Jackrabbit game. Some
of my first childhood memories involve getting together with a
friend and playing this game.
2. Without the work of Newspaz in creating a level editing program
that is versatile and easy to learn, I wouldn't be able to make
these levels.
3. I made extensive use of a tool called JJ1MOD, developed by
Doubble Dutch, which allowed me to import and customize a lot of
features that weren't present in the original game. Link to the
file is here: http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5471/jj1mod-beta/
4. Violet CLM helped out quite a lot in various ways, by answering
my questions and helping me learn the editor, betatesting the maps
during different stages of development and helping me finish this.
5. All the people who betatested and gave me advice on these levels,
that helped me fix a lot of bugs and problems with the game.
6. For the Lost Ages 1.2 patch and beyond, I used the J1LES and
J1E->JCS programs created by Violet, as well as the "official"
PSM Converter. I also used GIMP a lot for the graphical aspects of
this pack. For the Lost Ages 2.0 patch, I used Hexplorer to modify
the menu and episode selection text.
Finally, thank you for downloading and supporting this pack!
