one more fix and a hook!

Camou Aug 10, 2006 02:16 AM

Just want to say that I like it and I'd use it :)

zapS Aug 10, 2006 03:10 AM

im workin on a sucker tube now:)

Hareoic Aug 10, 2006 03:44 AM

I have the signs in progress.

Edit: Actually, they're done already.

Tried to make them look monolithic. If somebody wants to make them look more so, be my guest.

zapS Aug 10, 2006 10:25 AM

what's monolithic?

well, here's the sucker tube.

:-)

zapS Aug 10, 2006 10:54 AM

ok, i'm swedish if you wonder.
so you want it to look more like a stone tablet??

minmay Aug 10, 2006 01:31 PM

This tileset is officially going to be awesome.

Well, more like obsidian really. If that's possible. But still keeping with the color scheme.

zapS Aug 11, 2006 01:59 AM

... hrm, starting to feel quite stupid now:confused:
what's obsidian??

zapS Aug 11, 2006 02:05 AM

anyway...
time to do a background soon, I think.
what about a sky with stars?
the tileset looks like some sort of spacestation or what do you think?

Violet CLM Aug 11, 2006 08:53 AM

...obsidian.

Just a thought, but you might want to spend a little more time on layer 4 before starting in on a backround... as it is, this tileset is pretty basic and unvaried. I don't really see any reason to use it for anything.

zapS Aug 11, 2006 09:14 AM

you've got a point there;)

Fawriel Aug 11, 2006 12:41 PM

Space station is the cheapest thing ever. And so are most skies with stars.
I'd say we should have some rocks of the same color as the blocks to make it look like the structures were carved into the stone. Stone spires and stuff for the background.
...we should definitely find something to vary the color-scheme a bit, though.

Risp_old Aug 11, 2006 01:09 PM

Yes. I didn't mean for those platforms to be the ONLY ground D=

Fawriel Aug 11, 2006 02:03 PM

If nobody does it before me, I will attempt to make some rock-ground tomorrow after I got some sleep, which I am in a dire need of right now.

I envision the tileset to be cave-like, however, not exactly a cave.. besides, caves are overused in any genre of games.
Imagine a mountain or canyon with extremely complex cavern systems inside. You can see mountains in the background, through cracks, big holes and openings in the mountain walls, maybe a river flowing there, a canyon would be a nice idea, I think.
And inside these caverns, some native society built their homes.
I love the idea. I should make a sketch of what I have in mind to be able to illustrate it better, I think you'd like it.

n00b Aug 11, 2006 07:14 PM

I envisioned the set to take place underwater. Like a Hi-tech atlantis labratory.
But since I don't have an extensive writeup like Faw, we'll have to go with his idea.
However, having a vague idea could produce much more imaginitive tiles than a more outlined one. Then again a vague plan could lead to another September mishap.

Violet CLM Aug 11, 2006 09:32 PM

It's a bit straight-lined and non-tilted for this, but it kind of reminds me of an abandoned factory or laboratory or something sinking into this giant lake of glowing green acid, and everything's abandoned and/or radioacitive and alive.

Fawriel Aug 12, 2006 12:21 AM

Hmmm, I see.

Well, for those interested, here's the sketch: http://chaos.foxmage.com/canyonthing.jpg
The numbers of course denote layers. Layers 5+6 may also be made into a single layer, I guess, but it wouldn't allow for flowing water.
Both the water and sky should be a bright blue to make a pleasent contrast to the murky colors inside. The background canyon and rocks should be of the same color as the ground, except paler, of course, which would create a sense of depth and close the tileset by showing the player that they are inside such a rock.
Also, I tried to make clear that the rocks ought to have depth. I dislike how many tileset makers just make a texture for the ground, then give it a one or two-pixel border and call it a job well done. Borders with a real sense of depth are harder to do, but should be worth it.

Well, that's just an idea. Either of yours' could work as well.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, the water should be layer 7 for the same reason why the stone spires should be layer 5.

Fawriel Aug 12, 2006 03:56 AM

Sorry for the double post, but...

How do you like these?
...well, I'm not really fond of them myself. I'm not too experienced with tilesets. Feel free to disregard them.

zapS Aug 12, 2006 10:36 AM

Well, I think the idea with the abandoned factory/laboratory is good.
Because that's what the tileset looks like right now.

Fawriel Aug 12, 2006 11:27 AM

What it looks like right now is frankly quite unoriginal, though. So are factories and laboratories. Buildings sinking into lakes, on the other hand, are not. We have to expand the theme somehow.

zapS Aug 12, 2006 11:34 AM

here is a computer!
and I've put all the colors used in a little palette.

Hareoic Aug 12, 2006 11:43 AM

If it sunk, there should be cracks in the walls where water leaks in. I'd do that, but I'm not good at drawing/animating water.

cooba Aug 13, 2006 10:05 AM

I still think the blocks should be given a texture instead of blank grayish blue color... ;|

Fawriel Aug 13, 2006 10:19 AM

Not everything needs texture. Go cartoony graphics. >O

Also, I like how nobody said anything about my two recent distributions.

cooba Aug 13, 2006 10:33 AM

Well uh yeah.. the background as you envision it is an example of style over functionality. There won't be much possibilites with such a background, and every level will look the same therefore.

And the texture doesn't look too good, sorry D;

Fawriel Aug 13, 2006 10:54 AM

Well, I guess so. But except for the sky, which should be textured, all the background elements could also be exchangable and we could give alternatives. ...besides, most tileset backgrounds are kind of like that, aren't they.

zapS Aug 14, 2006 09:58 AM

I like fawriels idea too.
what about combining it with violets.
I think that's a good idea.

cooba Aug 14, 2006 10:01 AM

Uh, I wouldn't want another tileset with a lake of acid myself. Even if I was responsible for the one in Kansas. Just go with water.

zapS Aug 14, 2006 10:09 AM

ok, but abandoned laboratories inside the mountains and cavern systems.
what about that?

How about oily water instead?

Although that might take too many shades of purple and such...

Unless it's just black.

Violet CLM Aug 14, 2006 01:47 PM

I vote for it floating in an ocean of chicken noodle soup.

Murderbeam Aug 14, 2006 02:33 PM

No, That would be Nonsensical.
Floating in a ocean of Sewage!

Can't we just make a *pretty* set? D=

Nice work, everyone who contributed. :)

To contribute myself, I'd say the tileset looks nice, but very bland. Too much blue/black. :E

zapS Aug 16, 2006 05:29 AM

Here is another ground tile:)

How do you like it?
(the thing to the right is just all colors used, 8 colors)
