Yes, I've been always tought that JJ2 is a cheap-(-) rip-off of Jazz Jackrabbit by Epic Megagames. They even used the same design, for the main character, not mentoing the similarity in the games' titles. :O

two eyes you communist

Sonyk Feb 25, 2006 06:03 PM

Originally, he had none. He stole eyes from someone else.

Ms. Pacman was the first victim of this stealing frenzy.

Doubble Dutch Feb 26, 2006 12:48 AM

Indeed, and on that box, if you look carefully, one of those eyes is painted on...

Hate to revive a thread because I know theres people who would sic on me, regardless of the fact I have a legitimate reason to revive a thread.

The following music is from Gex 1 (circa 1995). At 38 seconds, the laugh or whatever used for Devan can be heard.

Stijn Oct 29, 2006 03:38 PM

It's perfectly possible that both tunes just licensed the same sample. Just like one of the cheering samples from RollerCoaster Tycoon can be heard in the Mission: Impossible movie.

Sciz CT Oct 29, 2006 10:49 PM

Sound effects tend to be pulled from stock sources. I've heard an alarm sample in a recent episode of Doctor Who that I'm pretty sure was the same as one in an RTS from 1997. If you pay enough attention, you'll notice that some things in movies don't just sound the same because it's a similar event, but because it's actually the same sample being used.

DoubleGJ Oct 30, 2006 08:21 AM

...so I'll never know who voice-acted Devan. :(

Unhit Oct 30, 2006 10:50 AM

it was the first game i had :D 3 floppys :D it pwned! although the last scar encounter was impossible (!)

(-) i never noticed this thread before :o

Doubble Dutch Oct 31, 2006 02:24 AM

The Gex midi won't load for me, all I get is a stub of about 4Kb

Pako Nov 1, 2006 07:19 AM

Since noone actually posted the stuff of Diamondus resembling Sonic 2, I'm going to post both screenshots:

Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic 2 is pretty much Tubelectric too, I think.

BattleSpaz Nov 1, 2006 10:22 AM

JJ Springs = Sonic springs
JJ sucker tubes = Sonic tubes from chemical plant zone
JJ idea from super fast rabbit = Sonic The Hedgehog, a super fast hedgehog
Spaz = Tails (Well... Nearly!)
Lori = Amy (...Yeah)
Devan = Eggman

And indeed, chemical plant zone is much like JJ tubelectric. I could list more things if I would remember them...

What the hell are you talking about. Seriously, what the hell are you talking about.

Doubble Dutch Nov 1, 2006 09:13 PM

I think he's trying to relate everything in Jazz 2 to sonic.

Dew Nov 2, 2006 01:52 AM

Oh man, hasn't anyone ever noticed this obvious little thing? I mean, there are people around who have lived in the early 90's, you should know this if you ever owned a NES.

I've always thought of Jazz as a crossover between Bucky and Sonic. That was an amazingly difficult game, I still haven't beaten it. The TV series is also neat.

jazz gba anyone? :P

I thought it was common knowledge that Jazz the rabbit's early character design was slightly based of Bucky?
Jazz the game's gunplay could come from anything in particular, since Bucky on the NES was pretty much Megaman with a rabbit.
So really, while we can say the Jazz himself is based of Bucky, Jazz Jackrabbit the game could have been influenced from any number of sources, the most direct one being Sonic.

Finally, before anyone brings this up, Jazz and Bucky are in no way related. There's cannon from each series that make a family theory impossible.

FQuist Nov 2, 2006 12:01 PM

Bucky looking like Jazz isn't the only thing in that picture. A carrotus-like tileset, is, too.

Carrotus was already shown to be directly based off a tileset from the Lion King game, plus it's really stretching it to call the Bucky screenshot "Carrotus-like".

Mario 3 has a level with green grass and brown soil/rocks! IT'S CARROTUS-LIKE!!!!!

NovaStar Nov 3, 2006 02:15 AM

Agreed.

cooba Nov 3, 2006 02:21 AM

And by the way, didn't Sega take "inspiration" for Ice Cap Zone from Nippius?

DoubleGJ Nov 3, 2006 09:00 AM

One of the zones in Sonic Advance 3 looks like Letni a bit.

No, Sonic 3 was in production before Jazz came out. Since Ice Cap Zone was included in Sonic 3 and not Sonic & Knuckles, it would've been one of the first zones put into the game. Also, the poles in Jazz 2 were probably inspired by those in Sonic & Knuckles' Mushroom Hill Zone. Since the game was released a few months after Jazz 1, they never got to consider the idea for Jazz 1.

Still, SEGA was a pretty big company back then, and Epic was a fairly unknown American company in comparison, so probably not.

Violet CLM Nov 3, 2006 12:01 PM

Ice Cap Zone was complete long before Jazz was even announced.

Doubble Dutch Nov 3, 2006 10:48 PM

You've got to admit; the storylines for Bucky O'Hare and JazzJackrabbit are awfully simalar.

Both I imagine, get annoyed at people calling them 'rabbits'

Stijn Nov 4, 2006 12:01 PM

They are similar to virtually every "evil mastermind plans to destory mankind/universe/something big" story :|

NovaStar Nov 4, 2006 12:15 PM

Or kidnap some princess or someone.

Doubble Dutch Nov 4, 2006 06:53 PM

Both green non-rabbit lapins, both fighting cold blooded creatures that have taken over the universe, I smell a copywright violation.

Puffie40 Nov 21, 2006 10:06 PM

Jazz Jackrabbit is not the only game "To steal from other games"
