If it's only a game and it's not important why do you obsess on crashing servers?
Seems like one is being a tad bit too hipocritical here.

Superjazz May 2, 2006 03:28 AM

Suprising that you even answered my post that wasn't even aimed to you(only.) Neither I related it to the game in any way, but perhaps I should watch for my health indeed. It poisons everything in mankind to post stuff here in jcf, both you, me, and everyone.

Camou May 3, 2006 11:35 PM

I don't have any ip because I don't have apprehend and stuff. It happened in the Battle Server, and ******* used a laser and we all got kicked off. The server was still up after though. Happened 9:25 or something. I also got a screenie, but that's of him doing something else that's also cheating. PM me for link.

Puffie40 May 4, 2006 07:32 AM

everyone, we seem to forget that this is for crashing reports ONLY, not chat. Sure I feel like ripping UF a new one, but we should do that on a new topic.

Alright, I've said it before and I'll say it again: THE SERVERS ON THE LISTS ARE NOT YOURS. YOU DO NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER THEM.

I've also said this before:

Unreal and Unreal Tournament have internally-managed servers, meaning that the servers on the master server list are owned and maintained by the people running the servers. Jazz 2 was once like this, but when the new server lists came into place, the new communists list server owners got the stupid idea that the stuff on the lists was theirs.

Allow me explain how the list server works as opposed to the server, (WA)

A connection to the list server is sent on port 10053 (TCP):

07 (L) (I) (S) (T) 01 01

where a letter in (brackets) is ASCII.

A list server will send a packet back. This will be seen as:

(size) (?) (IP in hex, reversed) 27 (Server name)

The second byte is, as of yet, unknown. The output could be completely random.

A server will actually send data to the list server:

(size, which is always 0x44) 27 (Server name. There is a null space until 0x23 bytes in the
packet. 0x23 is 0x01.) (player limit) (gametype, add 0x01 if private) 32 31

The server will then listen on port 10052 for incoming connections, and when one is received, the server starts sending game data.

Ports 10053-10057 are thus not game related, and are only used by the list servers to list and delist games and provide information. The server is providing the game, and the list server only provides a few bytes.

As for crashing, it doesn't affect the server lists in any way, besides occasionally leaving a pinging server. What it does affect is the server providing the game, which will usually collapse if not correctly protected. The game goes down, and the list server is not affected. As I've pointed out before, the games have nothing to do with the list servers and are therefore the responsibility of the individuals maintaining and hosting the servers, not some (guy) in England.

I suggest the solution to this whole crashing problem is just to give people links to peerguardian and a list of IPs that are causing trouble so that they can fix problems with their servers from there. This whole thing about reporting crashers so they can get their access limited is total bull, as the people can easily find proxies to access the lists on port 10057.

And why are you wondering why I started crashing? Well, just read the paragraphs above. I don't believe that a game should be run by a bunch of (people) who think the world is theirs and that they own everything. This game should be run by the people who host the servers and provide the entertainment that was once Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It was a really fun game to play for a while, but you ruined it. Grow up, and start to realise the world doesn't revolve around you.

(PA)

Sincerely,
UNKNOWNFILE

n00b May 5, 2006 11:54 AM

To be honest, you crashing servers just makes that Tea Time loving english dude look like a war hero.

Instead of a revolutionist, you end up looking like a crackpot. Obviously, more people are having fun than you are, and would rather have their fun instead of having you ruin it.

So you target the people that you want to run the game and that you wish well (you even post a post explaining that it's about the servers that matter, not the listservers - and then you target the servers), and leave the ones you actually have an issue with alone - you even state that to the serverlists, it makes little difference. Your arguments do not add up logically.

cooba May 5, 2006 12:00 PM

Personally I couldn't care less who hosts the listserver. As long as Nimrod and Mono don't decide to run scripts permanently delisting my server (which I quite doubt they will), I'm having fun with the game. And seeing as I don't like Nimrod in person all that much (truth revealed ;)), you possibly can't call me "brainwashed".

MoonBlazE May 5, 2006 03:05 PM

I think that crashing servers is both wrong and a waste of time.

And, you can call me brainwashed all you want.

Shows how little you actually know about the situation. When a game is crashed its stops talking to the list server about the status of player numbers in its game. the List Server Application coded by Epic then sits there waiting for a reply, when it doesnt get a reply it ends up hanging itself until a reply is given, or a 10 minute time out window. This means the list server wont be able to serve clients the games in progress for up to 10 minutes because some little kid thought it was funny to crash a server. This is why we originally took measures to protect our own lists, by blocking you and others.

Now the bug in the code has been fixed, the list server no longer hangs on servers crashing. So it opened the bigger picture to us. While games servers remain in control of the people hosting them, we will take measures to help game server hosters by making it more difficult for crashers to gain access to the list of servers up. The List Servers are private resources which are hosted by people getting no payment from Epic Games or the JJ2 Community. Therefore as it is our own resources, it is entirly up to us what we do with our lists. You have no right to access. Now, dispite you thinking I personally am nothing more than a nazi (yes, you called me that many times) its kinda weird how I allow free access to the list without restrictions even to people I dislike, dispite costing me bandwidth (which is pretty cheap, but ok). I personally take action against people like you who just waste there time making it difficult for people to enjoy jj2, by making it difficult for you to access my own personal resources.

NovaStar May 6, 2006 04:50 PM

And other's. I'm with you this time because I just got what you meant.
Well at least, an idea of what you meant.

Jam: Will record screenie for future reference. That I.P. looks familiar so I'll have a look at my other records.

EDIT: After looking that IP is new, so it's recorded.

2nd EDIT: Personally I'd ike to find out WHO IT IS. Any clue?

Jerrythabest May 6, 2006 10:47 PM

I were in there, but I'll let jam say who it was.. dont wanna do something bad again

Oh yeah, sure, go ahead and ban me, i'll be sure to use a proxy, but limited access is faster. I don't like to type out the IPs in JJ2 :(

Blackraptor Jun 3, 2006 07:47 PM

sorry uf, but crashing online games doesnt make you have a bigger (-) or something. only surgery can do that.

Contary to popular belief, FREEDOM OF SPEECH in the constitution only gives you the right to critisize the government without fear of becoming a political prisoner.

Lots of people (including you) translate this to say anything anywhere.

As per usual Unknownfile, your effecting the people who have done nothing to you. Its not really a concern to me that your flooding 10 servers or so on the list server, heck flood 1000 and it still wouldnt be an issue for me.

At the end of the day, keep trying to attack myself, or monolith.. all you want, but right now your only bothering the rest of the community..

But I will do them one favour if thats the case, give quite a few trusted community members the code to delist servers so they can just tidy up your mess.

Birdie Jun 6, 2006 05:02 PM

Wow, Thats a pretty good idea.

I think it's time for you to stop bragging and admit that you:
  • delisted Contrabandent without Becky's consent
  • wish to keep your list server network private
  • stop lying about giving community members the list server code (see second point)

Oh yes, I forgot to say:
A crashed ship is a wreck, but a crashed server is like spilled milk.

NovaStar Jun 6, 2006 09:59 PM

Yes, every Sunday at lunch I tune in at JJ2 to see what stupid antics you're up to. Many people say "Why can't UF be banned?". It's the same reason I stopped PE.
I simply couldn't be bothered.

Except in PE's case everyone was... how to put it... telling me my work was useless. Useless. See how negative some people are to the ones that try to help? "Useless". I'll useless you, you useless people! See? I useless'd you. You just sit around all day, not helping, calling me useless. And you know what? I simply can't be bothered.

Disclaimer: The above statement was not directed to those who happily help rid JJ2 of crashers, and these people are just not the ones in PE, but the ones in PE and the ones in the community.

Sonyk Jun 6, 2006 10:18 PM

Your work was useless because PE was just a forceful reorganization of power. Many people work to keep crashers out of JJ2, who also thought PE was useless. And it doesn't really matter if you can't be bothered, as you have no power and no one had the intention of bothering you for it.

Puffie40 Jun 6, 2006 11:40 PM

What difference does it make if a list server is private, UF? "OH GOODY, A LISTSERVER THAT'S OWNED BY THE PEOPLE!!!11 WE JUST NEED A BUNCH OF BROKE TEENAGERS AND KIDS TO PAY FOR THE BANDWIDTH AND SERVER, AND WE'D BE HAPPY!!!!111 YaYs!!!!"

Nimrod is sacrificing his time and money for us. without him, no multiplayer games would happen. Epic has forgotten us. The community has to look after itself

you are only affecting the players, and you admitted it in this quote:

Quote:

Doing this just to "Dethrone" a listserver? What a stupid mask.

Grytolle Jun 7, 2006 02:18 AM

I don't see why UF so desperately wants the source, but I am not sure if Nimmy really spends that much time on it as you think Puffie... And forgotten us seems a bit unlikely considering that redirect (however that was thanks to nimmy^^). In any case, I am rambling, and I just don't get why you bother arguing with UF. He is obviously stupid, so let's leave it at that.

NovaStar Jun 7, 2006 05:16 AM

I blame Contrabandent on being slow, glitchy, and not enforcing the first Orbitz ban in time (which was the primary reason as it seems).

All I can tell that PE did was be a big Advert for Anti-crash programs (which may or may not have been neccesary), and give crash reports to Nimrod. The latter added a middleman which no one wanted to use. Why give reports to someone else when you could go to the source? Especially when we have this thread.
THATS why PE was and still is called useless. Not because no one didn't want to stop crashers/hackers, but because everyone could do it just fine without you to begin with.

First of all, the reason I want the list server code is to fix bugs and make improvements then re-release it so this game has a bit more freedom. Ever get annoyed by having to listen to the same CD over and over again? That's what JJ2 has been like for the last little while. And I think that the redirection to N*mrod's list server by EPIC GAMES was a huge insult to the entire community. They could've just reopened their list server, but noooooooo....

Also, last thing. Your definition of stupid is coinciding with "person with too much spare time on his hands and is merely trying to find ways of entertaining himself". I just crash nowadays for entertainment, not to wage war against some guy who I'd love to personally attack here if not for the censorship.
