Signatures

Signatures must follow all regular content rules, but they also have some specific restrictions on size.
  1. Signatures may have at most 512 visible characters, and 1024 characters in total. This allows you to include BB or HTML code outside of the character limit.
  2. Signature images have a maximum total vertical image size of 200 pixels, a maximum total horizontal image size of 700 pixels, and a maximum total file size of 80KB.

The "total vertical image size" is the total vertical space used by images, according to positioning. For example, you can have two 150 pixel high images beside each other in your signature (total vertical image size of 150 pixels), but they couldn't be on separate lines (total vertical image size of 300 pixels, which exceeds the limit). The total horizontal image size is the same idea, just horizontal instead of vertical.

Signature images have never really had specific restrictions (before these rules were created), but very large images have never really been allowed. These restrictions should not cause problems for most people, and are more just a way of setting objective guidelines for image sizes.

Signature character restrictions should not be a problem for most people either. Remember that you can have up to 1024 characters, but only 512 can be visible. This will allow you to use formatting tags outside of the character limit. These limits are checked when you edit your signature (the admins aren't going to be counting the characters manually :-P).

Administrators will usually ask you to change your signature if it falls outside these restrictions, though they have the right to edit it immediately.

  • Signatures that are in any way limiting the accesibility of board functions such as the "Report this post to a moderator" link are forbidden.
  • Signatures that offer the users a way to change the signature itself are forbidden if it is possible for others to bypass the board rules via the signature.

You forgot those :P

Like what for example? If you're referring to something like Michael, that button still works.

Like putting a text linked to another page on top of it using CSS.

Like my old sig would take one to http://www.questionsleep.com instead of the normal report webpage.

CrimiClown Jul 2, 2005 12:14 AM

My sig keeps getting edited. Is this one permitted now?

Probably. You see, it was WAY too tall.

CrimiClown Jul 2, 2005 07:24 AM

Thanks, but Admin confirmation could help as well.

Xobim Jul 2, 2005 07:30 AM

I can't put an image in my signature. The size is doesn't cross the limits, I just can't upload it from my pc using the IMG code.

Link Jul 2, 2005 07:46 AM

CrimiClown: Your current signature is fine. It was too tall before. I don't know who edited it, but they should have either added a hidden message or sent you a private message about it.

Jazzmusic: This isn't the correct place to ask that (this forum is about rules only), but I'll refer you to this thread about images.

Xobim Jul 2, 2005 12:53 PM

Thanks, the first two posts were enough to help me out.

LittleFreak Sep 25, 2005 12:38 AM

I wonder if it's actually possible to make a 512-character signature looking like this:

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

to annoy everyone. ;D

Philip1992 Aug 5, 2006 08:24 AM

Hello. Is a link to my website. Fine or not.

minmay Aug 5, 2006 09:23 AM

Most likely, yes.

Stijn Aug 5, 2006 10:40 AM

It. Is fine.

Dermo Jun 9, 2007 07:47 PM

So now why was part of my sig deleted?

The image below was deleted out of my sig:
(Image)

WHY???

[Image with swearing filtered out - FQuist]

Images containing filtered words generally aren't allowed in signatures.

Radium Jun 10, 2007 06:20 AM

Was it that picture about internet speak? If so, you also forgot an apostrophe in it, I think.

Dermo Jun 29, 2007 07:56 PM

Do I have permission to use this in my signature?

[IMG]http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l30/drmooismyname/m13317621er4.gif[/IMG]

Stijn Jun 30, 2007 05:45 AM

Sure, it doesn't break any of the rules.

ShadeJackrabbit Jul 2, 2007 06:07 PM

What about mine? I tried to make it smaller and cooler looking... I think it still might be too big though...

Dermo Jul 3, 2007 06:55 AM

uh permission to use this?

Stijn Jul 3, 2007 07:32 AM

Let's see:
  • The maximal vertical dimension of a signature image can be 200 pixels PASS
  • The maximal horizontal dimension of a signature image can be 700 pixels PASS
  • The maximal combined image size of signature images can be 80 kilobytes FAIL
  • Signature images may not contain filtered expressions FAIL
As you see, that image is not allowed. Please, next time you want to add another image to your signature, go through the list yourself, so you won't have to ask here.

While we're at it, the images in your signature combined are 99 kilobytes big. Please remove one of them.

FreeFull Jul 3, 2007 09:06 AM

What about my signature?

ShadeJackrabbit Jul 3, 2007 02:14 PM

Seriously though, what about mine?

Replace the N/A's with whatever is the case with your signature. If any of these are negative, you lose, and your signature is not allowed. The wonderful thing about this list is that you can then easily, step by step, change your signature so it becomes valid.

Now anyone who asks again without having done this will be banned on sight.

Sure? Both your posts still read 700px tall, whereas Link's at the top states 200px.

Stijn Jul 4, 2007 02:06 AM

Well well. Oh at least everything is fine now.

Dermo Jul 4, 2007 08:24 PM

I can't remove those pictures i like them both. I mean if you REALLY want me to remove them it's better than being banned but I would LOVE to keep them both. The most I would want to remove is
Code:

95% of teens are addicted to myspace, if you are part of the 5% who have a life paste this into your sig
92% of teens listen to rap, if you are part of the 8% who listen to real music paste this into your sig

if you want me to remove them.

We aren't going to make an exception because you "like them both". If you can find a way to fit them into 700×200 pixels and 80 KB, fine, otherwise you can't use them.

Dermo Jul 5, 2007 05:06 PM

Well could you tell me how to resize the bunny to make it my avatar?

[IMG]http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l30/drmooismyname/BadBunny.gif[/IMG]

Birdie Jul 5, 2007 05:33 PM

Animated gif's cannot be used as avatars.

Monolith Jul 5, 2007 09:29 PM

You could take just one frame of it though.

Dermo Jul 6, 2007 11:49 AM

Would i be allowed to use this (taken from an Aerosmith CD cover)? Can somebody resize it for me plz?

[IMG]http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l30/drmooismyname/get_a_grip.jpg[/IMG]

FreeFull Jul 6, 2007 02:08 PM

Sure, I'll do it

Edit: Here you go: [IMG]http://www.freewebs.com/freefull/drmoo.png[/IMG]

Dermo Jul 6, 2007 02:31 PM

????reply to spam

am i allowed to reply to spam in my own signature

FQuist Oct 23, 2007 06:29 AM

If you mean if you are allowed to link to websites of your own, yes. I am unsure about blatant spam to make money, though.

no like if i were to put deleted posts in my sig like above where you deleted my fpcount.cpp and i was putting those in like say i was doing it so orbitz could post on the j20 using my sig and pwned

FQuist Oct 30, 2007 07:13 PM

I do not know what you are talking about. You should phrase your questions more clearly and provide some grammatical clues. You sound like you want to abuse your sig to make people execute code. That is, logically, disallowed.

If you have any good questions, feel free to post them. Otherwise, purposedly nonsensical questions waste our time and could be deleted.
