Avatars

You may upload a custom image (an 'avatar') that will display beneath your name to the left of your posts. There are several restrictions, however, that avatars must heed.
  1. Avatars must be exactly 48x48 pixels in image size, and must be no larger than 3KB (3072 bytes) in file size.
  2. Avatars may not be animated.
  3. Avatars must follow all existing board rules for image appropriateness.
  4. As avatars are hosted on our servers, they must be legal. This means that you cannot use a copyrighted image without permission from the copyright holder.

If you do not want to see avatars, you can disable them in your options in the user control panel. Likewise, if you want to see them and they aren't visible, you can enable them in your options. The default setting for new registrations is to have them enabled.

To upload an avatar, go to the user control panel ("User CP" in the navigation bar), and select "Edit Avatar" from the navigation bar on the left side.

Don't resurrect dead topics, and avatars will never grow here! =D

Stijn Jun 8, 2006 12:46 AM

Topics here are allowed to be revived, because it'd be a bit silly to open another topic to discuss the same subject. That said, I don't even know if it's possible for non-admins to open new topics here. So go ahead ;)

OK, small avatars, OK. But why EXACTLY 48x48? If I want, for example, 27x34?

You could easily just have some transparent space around your avatar to fill the rest of the 48x48ness, but you're right; it seems strange not allowing smaller dimensions if wanted.

Birdie Jan 26, 2007 03:51 PM

Maybe it just looks relatively the same this way?

FQuist Jan 26, 2007 03:55 PM

That is the reason we had, indeed.

Lena Dec 25, 2007 05:21 AM

Hello!:-)how to put avatar at this forum? I am not able to do it! Help me please!

Cpp Dec 25, 2007 07:54 AM

User Control Panel => Edit Avatar (left menu) => Enter image URL or upload it.

Lena Dec 26, 2007 02:07 AM

Thanks! Only why such small? (joke:))

Krezack Jan 29, 2008 12:03 AM

It's a valid question, Lena. The majority of forums have 100*100. I appreciate that an avatar is allowed, but the fact that it is so restrictive kind of relegates its usefulness to a token move.

The only thing that 100*100 might affect is that double height could lengthen posts made without a signature.

How many people do you know that don't have a signature?

It seems very much like 48*48 is an arbitrary number plucked from the air without any experimentation with what's within the bounds of suitability.

And the 3kb file size is shockingly small. Most pics seem to have a minimum size of around 3kb regardless of image data - 10kb is much more reasonable if the aim is bandwidth limitation.

If you link to an off site avatar I do believe it ignores filesize.

The best for this forum is 48x48 image....

Your justification for that claim stuns my senses. Oh, how it tingles!

n0 Oct 17, 2008 07:41 AM

So... are the Avatars going to come back?

FQuist Oct 17, 2008 08:15 AM

The answer to that question is rather obvious from the forum announcement, isn't it?

Odin Oct 23, 2008 05:21 PM

Personally I'd like to see the image size limit bumped up from 3kb to 5kb, mostly for reasons Krezack posted (3kb being a low minimum for .jpg and .png pictures).

Oh yeah, this makes perfect sense. No problem here at all, no.

CrimiClown Dec 23, 2008 02:29 AM

this forum is getting more corrupt every day. :(

Speeza Dec 23, 2008 02:37 AM

Stijn is a admin and it's basicly his forum or something. So he can have whatever avatar size as he wants. He's only one person so it's not gonna be taking up much space.

Seriously though, there's something very messed up with the avatars system (causing all avatars to reset somehow) and that was the result of me testing some stuff (uploading a random image). Expect my avatar to change a few times more until I got it figured out.

Speeza Nov 5, 2010 12:52 AM

I like the current avatar size.

Obi1mcd Nov 5, 2010 01:38 AM

I like my avatar size. It doesn't distract from the main posts, though wether or not that's a good thing I'm not sure.
