The 'narf' smiley

A long time ago,
in this forum,
there used to be a 'narf' smiley, with somebody opening his mouth wide. Where has it gone? Why has it been removed?
...and what IS narf? :(

n00b Sep 28, 2005 12:32 PM

Haha, Narf!

UNKNOWNFILE Sep 28, 2005 12:32 PM

Narf is a stupid expression from the Steven Spielberg animated series Pinky and the Brain used by Pinky at random moments. It's just like saying "duh".

White Rabbit Sep 28, 2005 12:40 PM

Yeahhh...but I wanted to know more about the JCF smiley. ;)

Slaz Sep 29, 2005 01:16 AM

And another thing is that the Lori smilie still isn't fixed or removed.

FoxBlitzz Sep 29, 2005 01:12 PM

:lori: :lori: :lori: :lori: :lori:

Yes, definately. It doesn't even show up in the post.

Ooh, cool, it was added now.

Slaz Sep 30, 2005 07:15 AM

Yeah, it suprises me. I saw that buggy smilie already on the day I made my first post at here.

Link Sep 30, 2005 09:01 AM

I don't know what happened to either smilie (maybe just lost through our various upgrades), but if someone finds a copy of the image or is willing to make a new one, they would not be very difficult to add.

?

White Rabbit Sep 30, 2005 12:07 PM

Lol? ;o

LittleFreak Sep 30, 2005 12:39 PM

It seems to work using the img-code, but not the direct way.

Link Sep 30, 2005 02:23 PM

I've added that image for the Lori smilie. I don't think it was the original one (I thought it was animated), but it will do for now.

:lori: :lori: :lori:

By the way, if you have created original smilies they could probably be added. We've had the same ones for a very long time now and something new, especially community-created, might be nice.

LittleFreak Oct 1, 2005 05:45 AM

Do they have to be self-created?

If not, please add [img]http://forum.sunflowers.de/images/smilies/silly.gif[/img] for awesomeness.

:lori:

White Rabbit Oct 1, 2005 06:15 AM

That's not even close to the original narf smiley!
Give it a different name. :(

..like, Leaf Man.

Radium Oct 1, 2005 09:53 AM

Didn't Hare make a whole set of rabbit smileys once?

Risp_old Oct 1, 2005 10:01 AM

We need a fooruman smilie.

And so the Fooruman obsessions go on again. Glad that :lori: is working now anyway!

I would say yes. While other smilies may still add value, they wouldn't have the same sense of pride or sentimentality that community-created ones would have. Rather than "just another smilie", they would be "a smilie that ___ created". Compare this to the forum themes. We have the standard vBulletin theme, but all the others were created by community members.

A Fooruman smilie, for example, has a lot of significance to a lot of people because the Fooruman character is so well-known in the community. Though FQuist might dismiss it with subjunctive antiquities, it may be just the kind of smilie that the JCF needs.

(If the creator of that Fooruman image gives permission, I will add it, though a more smilie-like version might be better).

n00b Oct 1, 2005 01:50 PM

Bleh, I'd rather not have a fooruman smilie.
I sense it'd be smilie raped to death instead of being used at times when it would be funny or apporitate.

Say we wanted to create one, what color is used for the "transparent" area around the rest of the smiley - so that it does not have the colored square around it? As in the Jazz-Blue color used in JCS tilesets.

Sonyk Oct 1, 2005 02:54 PM

If I'm being referred to as the creator of the Fooruman image, then it's fine with me if it's used as a smilie. I can't do anything to make it more smilielike though, since I lack pretty any skill in pixel art.

White Rabbit Oct 1, 2005 02:54 PM

Let's make Jazz and Spaz smileys too. :(

And Devan.

EDIT: Actually, let's not because that will keep Lori unique and special. ;p

Did you actually create the image? That's what I meant by permission, that the person who made it give us permission to use it.

Actual transparency should be used, because there are many different background colours on the JCF. This is something you set in the image properties, and it depends on the file type.

FQuist Oct 1, 2005 03:51 PM

And watch out with anti-aliasing, it will kill compatibility with different themes and transparency.

(I am not forbidding the addition of a Fooruman image at all, by the way. I thought it was clear I wasn't speaking out against it as an administrator. I merely share n00b's fears of it being used inappropiately)

Sonyk Oct 1, 2005 04:39 PM

Yes, I made the actual image you see there, but it's taken from Texterin, the somewhat evil wizard from Hocus Pocus.

FoxBlitzz Oct 1, 2005 05:14 PM

Yeah, other than the names, Fooruman and Terexin are very similar. You would find a secret treasure room and then later talk to him and he'd say, "You'll never find the treasure room! Ha ha!"

n00b Oct 1, 2005 05:41 PM

I always thought that was because Terexin was forced to spout the same lines over and over because of game coding, meanwhile Fooruman is just insane

What program is it that has an actual transparent color? I didn't mean to just set it to the same color as the background

I don't know a great deal about digital imaging, but a graphics program that lets you save as GIF or PNG should let you choose a "transparent" colour. You may have to go into options or something, but it will be there somewhere. Just pick a colour that shows up only as the background, and nowhere else in the image. For example, I could make an image with a blue background, save it as a GIF with blue set as the transparent colour, and when viewed in a web browser it would show up as transparent.

Fquist, if that was intended for me (as I was the only one who mentioned your comment), I apologize for making my joking tone inevident. If you'll read carefully though, you'll notice I said 'subjunctive' and not 'subjective', referring not to your opinion but to your literal use of "God forbid".

Thank you Sonyk for clarifying. You can now (dis)grace your posts with Fooruman's presence using :fm:.

:fm: :fm: :fm:

UNKNOWNFILE Oct 1, 2005 09:48 PM

:fm: AND DONT TALK IN CAPS TEIF!

Slaz Oct 1, 2005 10:45 PM

And what about the big EVIL smilie? Nobody is using it and I think because it's just too big.

*EVIL*

FQuist Oct 2, 2005 04:14 AM

I was going to ask you what subjunctive was, as the dictionary did not help me out :p. Apology accepted and apologies for taking it seriously so easily.

Slaz: I see the *EVIL* smiley used pretty regularly, well, not compared to the basic emotion-displaying smileys like the :) or the ;) smiley, but compared to the other smilies its use is not that infrequent. Latest example I can think of the use of the smiley as someone's running mate in the inofficial JCF elections. People seem to think of the size of the smiley as its main asset. For example, the smaller evil smiley, }>, is less commonly used.

Stijn Oct 2, 2005 04:26 AM

Code:

OMG :! or :omg:
Code:

Indifferent :|
Code:

Bwahaha :semi-evil: or something
Code:

EVIL HYPNO WHEEL EVIL HYPNO WHEEL!

White Rabbit Oct 2, 2005 05:02 AM

gg

We must have :|
But I think it needs to be more neutral. ;p
And the wheel must be animated.
:semi-evil: could be >)
:! should be the exclamation smiley. :omg: is like :O

:)

Yay for "Community-Created Smilies"!

Violet CLM Oct 2, 2005 09:31 PM

I remember I was using this a while ago:
(used for biting commentary!)

Stijn Oct 3, 2005 06:19 AM

Nice smiley Violet, but the PNG transparency is messed up in Internet Explorer, so it would need to be converted to .gif.

LittleFreak Oct 3, 2005 07:28 AM

AFAIK, the black colour in paint is transparent. At least in bmp format.
