Karrot Shire is an open world game based on Jazz Jackrabbit 2. In essentials, it is simply a large Jazz2 level with an add-on program. However, the scope of Karrot Shire is quite enormous, which is why we like to call it a 'game' instead of merely a 'level'.

In a way, Karrot Shire is like a 'hotel' or 'sandbox', because coins are still scattered everywhere and you can still buy houses and furniture if you wish it. However, this is not 'the point' of the game: you’ll have nearly 50 quests to complete in a GTA-style fashion.

Random Features

Very dynamic game world
Quests/Missions
Inventory
Secrets tracking
Saved games entirely managed by the Utility (offline)

The story
There you are, sitting inside a plane, on your way to your holiday destination. And then suddenly, your destination is changed. Your plane crashes on an island that belongs to a district on Carrotus called Karrot Shire. This is a place where many opportunities await you, but also many challenges. Life will not be easy, for a gang calling itself the 'Dark Hand' is gaining in strength and plotting the downfall of everything you see around you. Soon, you will find out that the plane was brought down for a reason…

Status
We have a completely revamped, though still unfinished version that works quite well. We will be making that available on J2O when we're satisfied with it. In the mean time, you can beta test KS if you want to (also see the post later in this thread).

PS.
So, no more online accounts. The data will still be accessible if you wish to import it to the new version.

HorvatM Dec 1, 2007 06:49 AM

Quite revolutionary, I think. And it reminds me of my two other not-so-sophisticated projects I've been working on, but have cancelled for a while.
This sure will beat the crap out of Second Life.
One more thing, is this beta-test thingy at 11 AM or 11 PM?

Superjazz Dec 1, 2007 07:11 AM

I never was too keen on RPG or especially MORPG, but this one doesn't look like a mass-productioned hotel, and I might be even trying it out.

At least if Snooze decides to leave MS for this, I'll play it longer.

R3ptile Dec 1, 2007 07:19 AM

lol MS yeaa killin' mushrooms!!!!!1

Sounds promising.

Stijn Dec 1, 2007 07:41 AM

Sounds very nice. How are you going to handle all this skills and shops et cetera? Are you using an external program? *reminds self to read opening post better next time*

SPAZ18 Dec 1, 2007 07:46 AM

Sounds really interesting. I have always loved RPGs like Final Fantasy & Paper Mario.
I downloaded the utility and have now signed up.
If I am free on the 16th, I'LL BE THERE!
Is this on at 10:00AM in the UK then?

n00b Dec 1, 2007 08:02 AM

Sounds a lot like Karazickle world, I'm in if my schedule is open

Fawriel Dec 1, 2007 08:17 AM

Holy krap.

Starting to really regret that I'm on a Linux system... once I get my JJ2 CD again and manage to actually install this game with Wine, it'll still be unlikely that this utility will work along with the game...

WadlCury Dec 1, 2007 09:12 AM

Hey, here Carrotpie speaking..

I have adjusted the time in the "When" part. Whe mean 11:00 IN THE MORNING (AM) , GMT+1.
For people in the UK : Yes, this means it will be online at 10:00 AM for you.

P.S. What do you mean with ms? =P

Anubis Dec 1, 2007 09:53 AM

Both work on Wine, JJ2 and the utility. That is, on Linux Ubuntu.

Anyway, as far as I know, if this runs on itself without server supervision, why can't you run a dedicated server? Just leave it on. :O

FreeFull Dec 1, 2007 10:12 AM

I can't wait.

Yasco Dec 1, 2007 10:14 AM

Interesting project. I wonder if the server could handle with this much people(and with lag like, for example, fake carrots).

Birdie Dec 1, 2007 10:22 AM

I've yet to find these 'anti cheating measures'.

don't give people ideas!!

WadlCury Dec 1, 2007 11:43 AM

Of course, cheating can only be detected up to a certain point. But if you do it and you're caught (and that chance will hopefully be pretty substantial), there will of course be consequences.

And yes, we do have plans to set up a dedicated server. It would be great just to leave it running 24/7! We're not that far yet at this point, though.

KRSplat Dec 1, 2007 11:52 AM

Looks cool. I signed up.

Violet CLM Dec 1, 2007 12:08 PM

Sweet, I'll be out of classes by then. :D

Slaz Dec 2, 2007 02:47 AM

Sounds interesting, I remember your Waddle Deluxe Hotel back in the days which was a great level (for a hotel). Atleast I think this one doesn't end up as another one of those noob hotels. I'll sign up!

HorvatM Dec 2, 2007 05:43 AM

I signed up, but for some reason I can't download the needed utility. (I think it's a problem with my network connection.)

Could you provide a Torrent file? (This would probably also decrease the bandwith usage.)

FreeFull Dec 2, 2007 08:22 AM

Erm, the utility crashes under Wine.

Stijn Dec 2, 2007 10:51 AM

MAYBE IT WASNT MEANT TO WORK WITH WINE AS IT WAS MADE FOR WINDOWS

AFTER ALL JJ2 WAS ALSO MADE FOR WINDOWS

JUST A THOUGHT

Dermo Dec 2, 2007 10:52 AM

Maybe you shouldn't break your own rules against flaming, Stijn.

WadlCury Dec 3, 2007 01:12 PM

More goodness!
We are planning to make a computer-controlled player (bot) that will be used to duel against in Karrot Shire. Still, not in 2007 I'm afraid. =)

master sven Dec 3, 2007 11:46 PM

I hope you can make a dedicated server in 2007, I think that's what we are all waiting for. ( I registered...)

Superjazz Dec 4, 2007 05:44 AM

A bot? This one caught my attention, tell us more please. Would it be possible to program one for jj2-multiplayer in general too?

WadlCury Dec 4, 2007 10:45 AM

All your items, quest-progress etc is being tracked in the database.

And if people had misunderstandings about it :
You sign up on Karrot.here.ws with an username you like. Handy to use something that looks like what you allways use ingame.

Ingame, you just use whatever you type at the character-change screen.

And the music in the trailer is called I.C.T.O.A.N .

I hope I helped with that :)

Carrotpie

Jerrythabest Dec 4, 2007 12:36 PM

Looks funny. Might as well sign up before the 16th.

Well, the bot would be programmed specifically for a small arena in the level. Inside that area it would be aware of its surroundings and its opponent. Making a bot that can cope with all environments would require much more flexibility and coding. Perhaps, one day, when we get the jj2 source code...
