Guilty Gene (comic)

Enter the Guilty Gene website!

Guilty Gene is my first comic with serious storyline - practically jokeless. It is a tale of Jazz's clone from Twin MegaBattleShips - his birth, trial and confrontation with Jazz. His whole, short life. It shows almost everything that happened on Battleships from his point of view.

The comic is quite slowly updated, but I'm trying my best to do it well and fast at the same time. It would be easier as a fanfic, but it would also lose a lot that way. I'm not a good writer, but I have some experience with comics. Enjoy, especially since there aren't many JJ fancomics.

UPDATE: This is the last update of this post. Since the website is now being updated with minimal delay, you won't lose much by skipping the DA part.

Hm, your cover image takes quite long to load. If you ever have less than 256 colors, save as a copy as a gif file with nearest color matching; it'll decrease the size a lot.

DoubleGJ Mar 27, 2004 10:44 AM

The problem is I'm not sure if used more than 255 colors or not. I also wanted to make JPEG, but it turned out to be HEAVIER than PNG (it was 127 KB).

Radium Mar 27, 2004 10:49 AM

I think that one actually uses more than 1000 colors (mainly because of antialiasing), but if any future images use very few colors, just try gif.

So, when does the comic start?

Fawriel Mar 27, 2004 11:18 AM

Hm. You've quite improved, I think.

loads fast for me... looks good! showusmore

Next page coming on weekend!

DoubleGJ Apr 4, 2004 03:13 AM

The page will be delayed since I got a flu and couldn't focus while drawing... Even now I must think a lot to write this post. Gah, back to bed.

Radium Apr 5, 2004 12:21 PM

I make some lame piece of fanart and write "Get Well Soon" across the top in a big, annoying font, but there's nothing to fanartize yet.

DoubleGJ Apr 18, 2004 11:53 AM

Update - first page added.

cooba Apr 18, 2004 12:00 PM

Text are making me laugh. Besides that, it = niftyniftynifty.

Strato Apr 18, 2004 12:00 PM

woah yeah!

Radium Apr 18, 2004 01:10 PM

I agree; very dramatic start. I do suggest, though, that you try to do the text and borders digitally (even if you don't have fancy software, things like Powerpoint can do really nice text boxes and whatnot =P). My comic improved a lot when I stopped hand drawing the text boxes and borders.

Oh, and think you forgot his ears. Or maybe I just can't see them.

Yes, but it also died.

I wanted to make it look rusted, when writing I drew lines with many, but short swipes. However, if this makes it too hard to read, I can give up with this idea for text.

They're on his back, just hanging out there. You can see them a bit if you look hard enough.

cooba Apr 24, 2004 11:40 AM

Now I just realised something... isn't this rabbit that grey Jazz clone from JJ1?

Violet CLM Apr 24, 2004 11:48 AM

Wasn't that guy large, gray, and a robot?

cooba Apr 24, 2004 11:49 AM

This is large and gray. And I doubt JJ1 one was a robot.

Violet CLM Apr 24, 2004 11:59 AM

Ooooh, you mean the COVER. Well, that's a possibility. It's got gray fur, red eyes (though a different style of red), a yellow headband and blue armbands, just like the one from JJ1.

Not a robot? It would have to have been blind if it wasn't a robot.

Batty Buddy Apr 24, 2004 12:07 PM

Que Passa!!!!

Beyond cool!!!!

DoubleGJ Apr 24, 2004 12:12 PM

Yes, this is him. I'm about to take a deep look into his trial to become game's hardest boss (at least by my own way).

cooba Apr 24, 2004 12:52 PM

Teh one in labratkid is also.

4I Falcon Apr 24, 2004 06:45 PM

I guess we can theoretically start referring to that boss as "Gene" now, right?

("OMG! I defeated Gene!" ...sorta doesn't have as much of an impact to it.)

I kind of thought of "Gene" as the genetics term, but I'm not sure which way was intended.

Violet CLM Apr 24, 2004 10:37 PM

I thought of Tyf.

DoubleGJ Apr 25, 2004 02:43 AM

You really thought I would call him Gene? More to come, more to answer, hehe.

cooba Apr 25, 2004 03:20 AM

Like Devil Dash's story.

I think that this Guilty Gene is actually some gene of evilness that went into rabbit's body.

Violet CLM Apr 25, 2004 12:03 PM

See? Tyf.

Evil isn't "guilty".

*cough*Guilty Gear*cough*

cooba Apr 26, 2004 06:30 AM

Rabbit went mad, and gene is guilty for that.

GET IT/////?????????

DoubleGJ Apr 26, 2004 07:07 AM

Quite.

Violet CLM Apr 26, 2004 03:48 PM

Tyf? I wish I understood what was going on.

DoubleGJ Apr 27, 2004 07:04 AM

I have just started the 2nd page. Now I have a new Conté pencil, so I can seriously get to drawing.

DoubleGJ Oct 8, 2004 09:27 AM

Yay! Page 2 is finally done. With the new computer I also got some good programs, including new Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro! Now I can use some good effects. You can already see that on page 2. I think I will fix page 1 also so it looks as good as page 2... Maybe there is something I can do with the cover, too.

Violet CLM Oct 8, 2004 12:53 PM

Ha, Devan's expression in the last panel is great. Actually, Devan is great in general.

cooba Oct 8, 2004 01:14 PM

Pwnt. Really. Ownage page. Moo. I am hooked.

Devan looks quite nerdy. ;)

Radium Oct 8, 2004 03:31 PM

Very nice; comicing is quite hard. Lemme suggest a few things, though:

-Try scanning and coloring the comic at a larger size, then shrink it down before releasing it. This will usually anti-alias the lines (sometimes called "smart size"), making them look softer.
-Try adding text digitally. Your handwriting isn't bad, but computer text just looks a bit better. Look at an example I made a while back with my comic that so totally isn't dead yet.

DoubleGJ Oct 9, 2004 03:43 AM

My sucky WinME doesn't allow smaller font than 8 and I can't fit that into speech bubbles.
As for the page size... I don't know. I can blur the image a bit. I draw on A5, because I seem to lose proportions when the drawing is quite big.

I mean, try scanning at a higher resolution; more pixels/inch. That way you can scale it down and have smoother looking edges, and it could possibly be large enough for digital text.
