Let's make a tileset!

Okay, kids, the project for this month is a tileset. And you can ALL contribute! Here's how it works.

Each week (3rd-9th, 10th-16th, 17th-23rd and 24th-30th), any given person may submit one single tile. All tiles will make it into the final tileset! A few base rules for submitting your tiles:
  • Avoid using too many colors... if you can limit yourself to one or two gradients, that would be best.
  • No graphics from sources other than this project.
  • You may edit other tiles which have been already submitted to create yours.
  • However, you may not edit your own tiles!
  • By submitting a tile, you allow it to be edited by other people involved.
  • No pornography or other illegal stuff should be contained in your tiles.
  • No restrictions on artistic quality!

(Obviously, a single one tile block is going to be the most usable tile, but let's see some variety, people!)

n00b Jul 3, 2005 06:24 PM

seems fun, let's see what I can come up with.
n00bs current list of what he'll do for each week, and the tile when submitted.
Week 1- Small tileset enemy-ish thing(also useful as a signpost... or a thermos)
Submitted!(Obvious warning: Please change white to the uppermost leftmost tile's color)
[img]http://www.maj.com/gallery/Lijik/Letsmakeatileset/lmatweek1.png[/img]
Week 2-Layer 5 Background(day) (Thought this would work better as one)
[img]http://www.maj.com/gallery/Lijik/Letsmakeatileset/lmaweek2.png[/img]
Week 3- Random Eyecandy tile(Or a hook)-Curse you vacation! This Entry is too late, and unless rollover is enabled will not appear-
Week 4-A vine.(Edited to continue Violet's Viney peice)-Summer camp == Not ever seeing this tile unless rollover is enabled-

Don't let my plans limit anyone else, if you want to make a vine tile, go ahead.

blurredd Jul 3, 2005 06:45 PM

A tile a week sounds like torture, but okay.

That's rather limiting. It would be rather awkward for each person to make a different ground top tile because they wouldn't fit in very well. Ah well, I might participate. I don't want this to become too noobish looking.

n00b Jul 3, 2005 06:53 PM

Well Aku, I think it is assumed, that others will edit your tile to add concistency. Since editing someone elses tile is allowed.

Violet CLM Jul 3, 2005 07:36 PM

Yes... people should be cooperative, not spend the whole month making their own platform type with no connection to anything else in the tileset.

blur: It's better than one a month... the idea is kind of that after drawing one tile, people will want to do more, so they'll start making tilesets, which aren't too common these days somehow.

FoxBlitzz Jul 3, 2005 07:44 PM

Ground top tile created from ground middle tile:

[IMG]http://chaos.foxmage.com/AkuKitsune/TileGroundTopv2.gif[/IMG]

I think someone should create an alternate ground middle tile for more variation.

Edit: Changed the tile so it's less flat. I hope this isn't against the rules.

FoxBlitzz Jul 5, 2005 12:27 PM

Come on people! We need more participants! :-/

blurredd Jul 5, 2005 01:17 PM

I might've posted something already if EvilMonkey's ground tile appeared less flat. Although, there could be another ground tile on top of it casting a shadow. Hmm...

Nitro Jul 6, 2005 04:31 AM

i had an iea to make a tile "tileset by michael", but that's gay so forget it. i'd make spikes but i can't be bothered uploading it.

Ae Jul 6, 2005 10:17 AM

How do I post an image?

FoxBlitzz Jul 6, 2005 10:30 AM

http://www.imageshack.us <- Upload images there and then specify the URL in the IMG tags. Or if you're a lucky (-) you get access to chaos.foxmage.com.

n00b Jul 6, 2005 10:31 AM

what's the file extenstion? It should work like so:
Code:

What do you mean by too flat? I can change the tile if you want me to.

Violet CLM Jul 10, 2005 10:31 PM

Week 2 begins! We've got three tiles so far... let's get rolling! *will draw something later on*

Violet CLM Jul 16, 2005 01:27 PM

Week two will be over in a few hours, I guess. Get stuff in please.

blurredd Jul 16, 2005 03:15 PM

Some sort of rollover feature would be great, but I guess I can't expect that to be implemented.

n00b Jul 16, 2005 03:41 PM

My tile for the second week has been submitted, and can be found at my post in the top of the page.

White Rabbit Jul 19, 2005 11:36 AM

I can't see the vine. Violet's latest tile looks like a vine, however.

n00b Jul 19, 2005 11:57 AM

The vine is slated for Week 4, which if you haven't noticed: This is week 3.

Alister Jul 20, 2005 09:51 PM

I reckon you need to keep going for many more weeks.

I may submit something... but don't hold your breath. :)

EDIT: *Ding*

FoxBlitzz Jul 25, 2005 10:15 PM

I think I need to edit my floor tile now...

Edit: Changed the tile so it's less flat. I hope this isn't against the rules.

Violet CLM Jul 25, 2005 11:41 PM

Meh, haven't been paying attention to the calendar. I guess it's the fourth week and stuff. Finish up time.

FoxBlitzz Jul 26, 2005 09:37 AM

:O Maybe we should extend deadline?

ShadeJackrabbit Jul 26, 2005 03:13 PM

Extend by about:
Until we have a finished tileset?

Violet CLM Jul 26, 2005 05:45 PM

It doesn't make much sense to extend the deadline. The lack of tiles is because people aren't interested in taking five minutes to draw a 32x32 pixel image, not because they don't have the time right now but will later.

blurredd Jul 26, 2005 07:54 PM

I usually don't make a tileset one tile at a time. From what I can tell, one big problem with group projects such as this one is a lack of theme and direction. If everyone doesn't have the same general idea in mind, the project will most likely fail. Then again, most people didn't have much interest in making a tileset anyway, which was one of the reasons this thread was created.

ShadeJackrabbit Jul 27, 2005 08:00 AM

Hold up! Some of us just can't use image hostings!

blurredd Jul 27, 2005 09:47 AM

I lose.

[IMG]http://www.jazz2online.com/d3/misuse.bmp[/IMG]

It's most of the entries above (minus n00b's second image since it couldn't tile) with a few edits plus some additional tiles I've made. I can only wonder what Violet's reaction will be to my blatant disregard for his rules (or at least the 4th rule). I also wonder what would have become of this project if everyone was allowed to add whatever they wanted at any time.

Fawriel Jul 27, 2005 09:49 AM

Probably..... well, something.

( I think you forgot a few more tiles, by the way. )

Strato Jul 27, 2005 09:51 AM

Bubbly.

blurredd Jul 27, 2005 10:31 AM

I don't think I'm missing anything, aside from the tiles that some people said they would post but haven't yet. It might be a good idea to get in some different types of tiles (for example the difference between the yellow blocks and red bricks in Tube Electric).

White Rabbit Jul 27, 2005 10:33 AM

By putting all those tiles together like that, it will be much easier for ppl to see what kind of theme their tile needs to be, so hopefully you'll have less problems on that front. :p

Violet CLM Jul 27, 2005 12:13 PM

Interesting. My reasoning behind the one tile thing was that I didn't expect people would actually try to make things compatible - I expected a black tile, a letter block, a random ground thing, maybe a spike, just lots of random stuff like some tilesets are actually composed of. You are perhaps right that it would have made more sense to let people add more than one tile, maybe without the weekly thing.
...I'd try that next month, but I'm not going to be home for much of it... if anyone else wants to try a freer version of this, go ahead.

Yes, what helps for me is using a tile preview in Paint Shop Pro. To get to it, select the seamless tiling filter, check the box that says "Show tile preview", and inside the window that pops up, check "Show original". Of course, don't apply the seamless tiling filter: the dialog should only be used to preview how it looks tiled.

I see you can put images in your avatar... what about using that?

Here's a weird little thing to puzzle you with.

Ae Jul 27, 2005 08:27 PM

I created a stomp block to go along with the other stuff.
[IMG]http://chaos.foxmage.com/AEsTilesForVioletsJCFTilesetThing.bmp[/IMG]
Well, I can't decide whether or not to make it green so it blends in, because that would be hard to see. Somebody pick a color.

Here is the one we chose!
[IMG]http://chaos.foxmage.com/AEsTileForVioletsJCFTilesetThing.bmp[/IMG]

White Rabbit Jul 28, 2005 06:19 AM

Needs a bigger exclamation mark, imo, or at least one in a slightly more contrasting colour. Unless you really do want the tileset all green.

Birdie Jul 28, 2005 09:13 AM

make the exclamation mark pink!

Fawriel Jul 28, 2005 09:16 AM

Either the white or blue variant.
