Jazz 2 Bonus Level Sprites

I had requested to Pyro in MIRC earlier today to post the JJ2 bonus level sprites so I could make comparisons to JJ1's. I had only asked for one, but instead got the whole shebang.
The sprites are:

Nice find. I never knew such sprites existed in the game.

Nimrod Aug 8, 2005 07:50 PM

sweet

FoxBlitzz Aug 8, 2005 08:15 PM

Something I would like to say, the animations labelled "Hurt" should be renamed to "Skid". It's more appropriately named that way.

...I like being picky.

Edit: And what's with the Spaz Roll Larger animation? I think the original is appropriately sized. Look at how skinny Spaz is compared to Jazz.

Black Ninja Aug 8, 2005 08:31 PM

How rux. I was wondering if the animations were ever actually put in the game.

NinJazz Aug 8, 2005 09:50 PM

Where from game can I even find these?

ThunderPX Aug 8, 2005 11:10 PM

...

SRB2 modding, here I come.

White Rabbit Aug 9, 2005 12:50 AM

There's gotta be more sprites if the bonus levels are in 3D. In JJ1, you can see Jazz sideways when he turns when running.

ThunderPX Aug 9, 2005 02:50 AM

I always wondered how exactly they'd make the bonus stages work in JJ2, because the 3D technology in 1998 really didn't fit in with the sprites, IMO.

The same way as they were in JJ1 I think... .j2l file format read out differently.

Don't forget that this art probably already was done early in 1996. JJ2 had some huge delays.

DoubleGJ Aug 9, 2005 04:51 AM

That's awesome find! And you know... these rolling animations look a lot like the ones in Sonic Advance 2 bonus stages.

I'm just using Pyro's names, and am in little mood to change them.

@Ninjajazz: You hack the game. It's the samething as the Tweedle sprites
@WR- I would assume the game uses the Rotate sprites for when Jazz turns. If you recall in JJ1 when you turned you couldn't move, and the JJ1 Turn Sprites are also used in the game's rotate.
For those of you who use archive.org, information on the bonus levels can be found on the old JJ2 site which can be accesed by doing a search on www.epicgames.com and choosing some of the earlier links. I wonder if the "Eye-Popping" time traveling effects are still in the game.

I thought you could move when turning- it just displays the forward walking animation.

n00b Aug 9, 2005 11:55 AM

What I meant was you wouldn't be walking diagonally or something

Actually no. He'd just run forward even when turning. The only time you see him sideways is when he's turning while standing still; it's the first frame of the turning animation. Sonic however had running animations facing sideways (Sonic CD, Sonic Advance 2)

Okay. This is cool. You could make a Jazz 3D with 16-bit sprites instead of 3D model!! At least I like the idea.

The only reason to like that idea is that your computer is horrible.

I like that idea. Is my Celeron 2.2 GhZ with 256 MB of ram horrible, then?

Fawriel Aug 10, 2005 07:00 AM

The idea is nice and all, but it would restrict the possibilities of the game since if you are going to use the original sprites, they aren't very many, and if you are going to make your own, nobody is going to make enough sprites so that it wouldn't look choppy if the camera turned.. see what I mean?

blurredd Aug 10, 2005 07:58 AM

It would make for great bonus levels in addition of a JJ2 episode if someone managed to make a game from those sprites.

How could you forget Sonic CD? :O

Sonyk Aug 10, 2005 10:07 AM

It wasn't forgotten. It just wasn't mentioned. Though Sonic CD did that first.

FoxBlitzz Aug 10, 2005 06:51 PM

Probably Jelze hasn't played that particular game before. It was released on a console nobody bought, but I was fortunate enough to get an OEM PC version with one of my older computers.

Jerrythabest Aug 11, 2005 12:25 AM

JJ2 just gets stranger and stranger! Why didnt they use those sprites! They're cool! Nice, n00b!

I think you mistook the Mega CD for the 32X.

ShadeJackrabbit Aug 11, 2005 10:08 AM

Actually, (refering to my last post) I love 8-Bit and some 16-Bit better than full fledged 3D or full orchistra, (refering to music) but that is only for some games.

FoxBlitzz Aug 11, 2005 10:18 AM

The Sega Genesis sound system is utter crap. All hail the SNES.

Sheesh, that's what you get for not noticing a typo...

Yes, I meant Sonic CD with "Sonic 3D", Sonic 3D doesn't really count. I have the PC version of the game (which can only work on XP with a special patch). It was first released for the Sega CD/Mega CD system and no, hardly anybody bought it.

Sonyk Aug 11, 2005 01:19 PM

1. No it wasn't Aku. It was one of the best systems that was overlooked due to the giant that (at the time) was Nintendo. It didn't due well in America because of poor marketing, the same fate as that of the Sega Master System.

2. This isn't really the place to be expressing your views on consoles from 1990.

n00b Aug 11, 2005 05:25 PM

Why is everyone saying it takes too many sprites to make your own custom one? It's not like the Jazz or Spaz rotatation has 230 sprites each. Jazz alone has 44 sprites when all the frames from each sprite I posted are added together. That's not terribly bad. The only problem is getting the rotations right.

Actually, that game does have turning animations for the special stages. And calm down, how was I supposed to know you made that typo?

SpybunnyCC Aug 12, 2005 09:09 AM

i like them.
