J2B format figured out

Since none of you bother to look on the article section.

J2B format explanation

Anyone willing to make a converter?

ThunderPX Sep 12, 2005 09:01 AM

Awesome, now I won't have to make that Epic Soundtrax thing.

Violet CLM Sep 12, 2005 11:42 AM

Use the "Latest Articles" sidebar and you'll know about these things even faster. It's been around for days.

Stijn Sep 12, 2005 11:42 AM

I was too lazy to reply to the article :|

I knew about it since it ever came on J2O. =P I just felt like showing this on the JCF because barely anyone cares to visit the article section.

ShadeJackrabbit Sep 12, 2005 02:28 PM

That is true. It is interesting, but what is the point?

Monolith Sep 12, 2005 06:00 PM

It hasn't been high on my list of things to work on programming-wise.

FQuist Sep 12, 2005 06:03 PM

I spammed it in #jj2 a couple of times. Little people seemed interested, even though it could provide clues on how to decompress the other formats too, possibly.

Mercurio Sep 12, 2005 08:55 PM

=O! Somebody decompile 7thheaven then or something because it never seemed to work on 1.23/1.24 only on 1.21 havent heard it in ages so cant remember it but I did like it back then I believe. :)

Sonyk Sep 13, 2005 02:11 AM

I think a lot more people would be interested if they could program.

Newspaz Sep 13, 2005 04:45 AM

I know people who figured this out by themselves. But the strange format that came out in the end put them of.

White Rabbit Sep 13, 2005 08:31 AM

I'm not not appreciative of DR. Eggman's efforts, but this is clearly only useful for certain ppl, not including me.

DoomFrost Sep 13, 2005 01:54 PM

Question? What is J2B format?

Link Sep 13, 2005 02:07 PM

J2B (after the file extension, .j2b) is the format in which JJ2 stores music data.

It probably wouldn't be difficult to make a converter, as long as you're familiar with tracker formats, but would it be worth the effort? I thought we already had access to original formats for the music.

I never saw the christmas song anywhere D=

ShadeJackrabbit Sep 13, 2005 03:21 PM

If you have Multiquence, you can record what comes out of Stereo or Mono. Much easier.

Which Christmas song?

FQuist Sep 13, 2005 06:03 PM

whare.j2b, I'll assume. if it was in .j2b..

Sonyk Sep 13, 2005 07:18 PM

That it was (whare.j2b;.j2b format). And, I believe Lori Central had it in .s3m format. At least, I have it.

Monolith Sep 13, 2005 08:25 PM

Whare.it?

DoubleGJ Sep 14, 2005 12:17 AM

Actually, I think the songs we don't have in readable format are Boss0 and Bonus2.

ThunderPX Sep 14, 2005 02:38 AM

I don't remember having any boss song for that matter, as well as Bonus2, yeah. Oh, and the menu song kept being changed around so the version in the game might be somewhat different.

Could probably spam the link to Ian Luck, creator of XMPlay. He's been looking for more info on the format eversince a grand total of 2 (myself included) persons asked for J2B-reply capabilities in XMPlay. :P

Is there anything that makes a .j2b better than a .mod? Like smaller filesize or something

Radium Sep 14, 2005 03:59 PM

I think I heard the filesize is smaller, but I forget the specifics.

Slaz Sep 15, 2005 01:23 AM

I first thought .j2b was a general Jazz2 related file. Maybe that's why they used a weird system like that..

If you mean the songs up on lori central, then those are not identical to the ones in JJ2 (couple of examples: in JJ2 the labrat soundtrack doesn't have that zappy noise at the beginning, and none of the lori central tracks contain any looping information).

I did do some digging into the format a while back, but gave up after seeing some of the strange data structures that came out. Somewhere on this forum are my findings. Now that there's a more complete description of the format, I may have a go at making a convertor.

Slaz Sep 16, 2005 07:35 AM

I am not good with music systems for now. But does a .j2b file contain the data structure from a .mod or is it completely different?

Jerrythabest Sep 16, 2005 09:06 AM

Boss0 doesnt exist. Not at my version of JJ2. You are having a very rare version, if you have a boss0.j2b file. I have all the .j2b files except boss1.j2b and bonus2.j2b in .s3m (Fast Tracker II) or .it (ImpulseTracker) format.

Edit: not all files have looping information, sadly.

Slaz Sep 16, 2005 01:07 PM

Weird. Because the Jazz2 music engine can play all sorts of mod files..

Jerrythabest Sep 30, 2005 09:44 AM

Is this thread dead?

cooba Sep 30, 2005 09:52 AM

Next time you revive a thread give it some actual content please.

Puffie40 Mar 7, 2007 01:28 PM

I want a converter. I want to convert some of the music I have to MP3 (Easy to do with Modplug) so I can listen to it wherever I go. The no-lyrics game music helps me concentrate.

I feel Kinda miffed that everyone just ignoring this... :|

The three I want are "Warhead.j2b" "Noface.j2b" and "Try17.j2b"

ShadeJackrabbit Mar 7, 2007 01:51 PM

Check J20. I got one there.
