Boss Contest

Okay, I'm sure I'm not the only one who groans when they have to fight Devan Shell in yet another completely bare arena with no obstacles of any kind. Or when a Tuf Boss has its difficulty increased by throwing three thousand generating Tuf Turtle enemies in with it. And has anyone ever shown any interest in fighting the Queen?
These kind of things can be JJNXT fodder.

What I want to see are bosses which make me raise an eyebrow, smile, and maybe mentally raise someone's rating a little. Something awesome. So I'm giving you all a week - the time is short but it's not like you have to make a whole level or anything - to create a boss that I like. Any boss at all. Even a tile boss. Those are cool. Eyecandy isn't required but it makes things better.

I have basically two options for the winner... either I mention your name somewhere (don't know where, I'll give you a list of things I'm working on and you can choose one), or I turn you into a sprite. Your choice. But first you have to win. And all you have to do to win is create a single boss. (You can make more if you like but only one can win.)

Even if you don't take part in this contest, please heed the message. Boss battles are boring by themselves. Make them interesting!

EDIT: By the way, my definition of a boss is fairly loose. Defeating the boss does not have to automatically end the level, nor do you have to actually kill anything.

Question 1: Could we enter multiple times?

Question 2: If 1 = yes, then could we enter in something already uploaded to J2O?

Stuff already on J2O will only win if everything else absolutely sucks, sorry.

I know, but I didn't know if that meant simply more than one boss event, or a whole new boss level. Thanks for clarifying.

Also, the Bilsy boss in HH05 I made just for you (I recall you complaining that Bilsy was rarely challenging) :).

Black Ninja Dec 18, 2005 06:12 PM

Hmm, I think I'll make something.

Risp_old Dec 18, 2005 06:13 PM

I would make something if I wasn't so busy with... well, not actually too much.

Violet CLM Dec 18, 2005 06:20 PM

Here's a little something to start you off with. Yes, it's evil. No, I'm not going to judge myself the winner.

Iam Canadian Dec 18, 2005 06:46 PM

Ooh. I have a soft spot for boss battles, so this is something I'll likely enter.

n00b Dec 18, 2005 08:17 PM

n00b's Entry
Doesn't really raise the difficulty of the boss that much, but I thought the concept was pretty neat.

Sacrush Dec 19, 2005 05:18 AM

You mean something like This

Edit: Im not using this level for the contest, just so you know. I might make a real boss level ofr this contest.

Xobim Dec 19, 2005 05:58 AM

I'm thinking of a nice idea, I think I'll join this contest. :)
But do I have to mail it or post a link?

NinJazz Dec 19, 2005 06:44 AM

I want a Bass Contest.

*ahem*
Sorry, UR.
Hm. I'd enter, but I don't even currently have Windows on my computer.. don't know when I'll get it back. Levels are not an option till then.

ThunderPX Dec 19, 2005 07:35 AM

Couldn't you have done this BEFORE I uploaded the boss pit?

Wait, if I change the tileset, then it technically isn't something uploaded on J2O!

Xobim Dec 19, 2005 07:40 AM

OW, come on! Inventing something new is better!

You're right. Sorry about that. I'll wait another short time if Voilet is okay with that.

ThunderPX Dec 19, 2005 11:00 AM

Is there seriously no easier way of pasting events than to right-click and pick Paste Event for every tile?

BattleSpaz Dec 19, 2005 11:53 AM

Yeah.. Im actually gonna make something for this one..

EDIT: And hope that my idea works.

Shift + e :)

Don't forget that you can also block tiles using the B button, but remember the tiles will also be pasted. Events will only come on your tiles if they are attached to a tile or if you hold SHIFT when placing them.

ThunderPX Dec 19, 2005 02:15 PM

THANK YOU. God bless.

NovaStar Dec 20, 2005 02:04 AM

I don't quite get this. Isn't making a new boss making a new event? :s I cannot understand this truffle one bit.

Well, you see, there are a few possibilities in making a new boss.

1) You can make an animation which will hurt you if you touch it. You must destroy a trigger crate to open the 'door' to the ending. Just evade it all the time... Could be quite boring to make, but it works.
2) Have an original boss, put it behind some layer3 stuff and shoot it with Seekers, ElectroBlasters, Bouncers, etc.
3) Be creative! Respawning baddies could also make good bosses, if you do it right.

Or
4)Have an original boss, and force the player to solve a puzzle which leads to the boss' demise upon the puzzle's completion

ThunderPX Dec 20, 2005 07:20 AM

Am I allowed to use an old boss, but make an entirely new and challenging arena that totally changes the concept?

Define Old Boss.

CrimiClown Dec 20, 2005 07:52 AM

I think he means originally put in the game... :P

Well then yes, since I beileve that was the whole point of the contest.

Xobim Dec 20, 2005 08:20 AM

Weird question:
Am I also allowed for a multiplayer boss?

Fawriel Dec 20, 2005 09:18 AM

You mean, like, Bobby aka Dizzy? ;o

CrimiClown Dec 20, 2005 09:19 AM

Or... A schitzophrenic boss!

What? Where?

CrimiClown Dec 20, 2005 01:40 PM

Your armpits, in particular.

Violet CLM Dec 20, 2005 03:00 PM

Whoa, stuff piles up at night.

Yes, of course you can have a real boss event. That's the point.
I have no idea what a multiplayer boss is but yes, you can have that too.
I don't care about Ninjazz' armpits and it has nothing to do with the topic. Please stop or I'll report it.

ThunderPX Dec 21, 2005 03:31 AM

Aw (-)it >_< I can't make a proper boss with belts because the boss keeps going off-screen too far and the game resets his life. It's pretty funny to play though. Oh, and is there any way to stop things from... well, stopping at the end of a row of belt events? As in, Jazz falls off the tiles with belt events instead of stopping on the edge?
