More stuff JJ2 took from other games

I've been browsing old DOS games and such recently and came across a game based on the Lion King movie. I wouldn't have posted this had there not been screenshots on the same page, but there were and when I looked at them I quickly noticed that certain jj2 tilesets look quite similar to the ones in Lion King.

As I can't post the link here cause the site has warez and stuff on it, i took the screenies and uploaded them elsewhere.

So..

I don't know if you guys knew about this before, but I certainly didn't. Just felt like sharing.

Radium Jan 26, 2006 05:57 PM

I remember that game; I played the demo or something a long time ago. I remember it had really, really nice tilesets. And yeah, I'm pretty sure the JJ2 people got some (*cough*all) inspiration from it, especially the tileset shown in the latter image.

n00b Jan 26, 2006 06:02 PM

Wow, looks like Nick just took stuff and "jazz-ified" them.

Yeah, it does. Kinda dissapointing.

Edit: I might as well mention this here too, but I think Colonius was inspired by Captain Claw. There is a city locale in that game which looks similar enough to Colonius. Not only are the buildings similar enough to remind me of Colonius, but both of the sets have sewer systems in the city as well (though they look completely different).

So THAT'S why Dam Nation looked so familiar the first time I saw it! By the way, I don't have any comparison pictures, but I always thought the grass in JJ1 Diamondus looked a lot like the grass in Sonic 2's Emerald Hill Zone.

Doubble Dutch Jan 26, 2006 10:44 PM

Well, Jazz is a sonic clone with ripped graphics, big surprise.

Ðx Jan 26, 2006 11:28 PM

I played that game years ago. Still its funny ;D

DoubleGJ Jan 27, 2006 02:17 AM

Wow... I played this game, but I never passed the third level so I haven't seen these levels. Awesome.

BattleSpaz Jan 27, 2006 05:44 AM

Well, I think its not big surprise :/
Jazz 2 have lots of stuff copied from games. From Sonic. From Earthworm Jim (it maybe copied from jj2 xD). From all. Jazz 2 is kinda "game of cameos" ;)
And now I know why Lion king looked so familiar when I played it on emulator ;D

TaZaR Jan 27, 2006 06:15 AM

Well jj2 & 1 are a mix of some great old platform games (mario, sonic, aladdin, megaman, book of the jungle, etc.) with a Bucky O'Hare rip-off character, and on the story of the turtle vs. rabbit tale & star wars (cough... deckstar, bounty hounter, princess cough). :p But with this mix, the games turned out quiet original, with new stuffs too. I'm only feel sorry for that, they didn't used the robot riding idea from Megaman X.

I've been always tought on that why EWJ2 & JJ2 has the same weapon in the game? That weapon has a root in something and both of two games used the idea, or just one of them ripped the other?

ThunderPX Jan 27, 2006 06:19 AM

Robots are slow.

I remember playing that Lion King game but it always crashed after a few levels or so.

I don't think so. Claw was made around the same time as JJ2, not far enough back for the producers to copy it.

And Claw's city was way better because it had a guy with a robotic arm that shot LASERS.

ThunderPX Jan 27, 2006 01:34 PM

I only ever played the shareware version of Claw IIRC.

White Rabbit Jan 27, 2006 01:45 PM

They look very nice. :)

Sjazz Jan 28, 2006 08:44 AM

I played the SNES version of the Lion King. Not a great game. I beat it in like a day.

n00b Jan 28, 2006 11:43 AM

Thats what I like about Disney Games. They're excellent for Car trips.
I don't know how I'd beat boredom going to my grandparent's house, if I didn't have Maui Mallard.

MSB3000 Jan 28, 2006 06:19 PM

You could explode permanent markers! -D

How fun!

Michael Jan 28, 2006 09:18 PM

As for the first screenshot, Crrotus is not the only place with brown soil and green grass. It might have inspired Nick, however.
As for the second, maybe Nick worked on that game too.

n00b Jan 28, 2006 09:25 PM

Nick's Resume does not mention the words 'disney' or 'lion king'

Black Ninja Jan 28, 2006 10:36 PM

OMG I THNK TEY TOOK THE GREEN BUNY OUT OF JJ1

I remember that Lion King game. I have it. In my closet. For SNES. I hated it.

The resemblance is clearly greater than just colors.

Doubble Dutch Jan 29, 2006 03:42 PM

Early and very early diamondus:

Anubis Jan 30, 2006 07:36 AM

I've played this game too. This is almost the same as jj2's carrotus ;) The second picture doesn't remind me of any jj2 tilesets hmm...

Gotta say Jazz looked pretty cool back then... :)

ThunderPX Jan 30, 2006 01:41 PM

That first shot, I'm almost certain that's a mock-up.

I'm not. It could just be a very early WIP screenshot, with static sprites instead of the animations (which possibly weren't done that time), no sky gradient, and different orb sprites. Also, the Exoticus-like thin blocks have indeed been used in an old version of Diamondus (as LEVEL3.020 shows).

No, I meant it's like just some muddy texture, it obviously remind of JJ2 but it's still not taken I feel.

okay, michael, the ground, the backround cave tiles, AND the plants have been taken from that game and put into carrotus. thats more than just texture...

n00b Jan 30, 2006 03:40 PM

The first level of the Lion King snes game is a mix of the two screenshots. It looks pretty cool.

Odin Jan 30, 2006 05:21 PM

I vaugely remember playing this game. Kinda fun.

Violet CLM Jan 30, 2006 07:38 PM

No, they're not identical graphics. They're INSPIRED graphics BASED on those from Lion King, but REDRAWN.

Redrawn = Ripped off. :p

- JelZe GoldRabbit =:3

UNKNOWNFILE Jan 31, 2006 04:19 PM

Ripped off = Mac OS X's GUI

Mac OS X's GUI = Windows Vista's GUI

OMG this is turning into an association! ;O

MoonBlazE Jan 31, 2006 04:44 PM

I don't really agree to they are a rip. Those tilesets in the gameboy game are far more limited and have far less details. Just because they have the same theme and certain tiles look the same does not mean they are ripped off each other. You may find that Nick probably never played the game (considering it was released in his adult age, and I really doubt he'd be playing Lion King on a GBA).

Please consider that some of the concepts nick stole/ripped were old ones, probably ones that he liked as a child himself.

Violet CLM Jan 31, 2006 05:46 PM

I played that game before JJ2, and Nick has a good history of being 'inspired' by stuff.

n00b Jan 31, 2006 05:49 PM

Nick played the game Cool Spot, and loved the animations. Why he didn't play a game that was animated by Disney animators just for the animations is beyond me. Remember, he used to watch a lot of old MGM and Warner Bros. cartoons for inspiration. Most adults wouldn't do that

Yes they would, that's one of the best forms of insperation for animations and just plain good entertainment. Especially since those cartoons were made FOR adults... You think those Looney Tunes gold collections packed with extras and commentaries are pumped out for the child auidience? Please...

ScionFighter Jan 31, 2006 11:57 PM

Sorry for disrupting the discussion, but I want to share my findings. I assume that most of you played Commander Keen (episode 5) before - there's an enemy very similliar to JJ1 Sparks. Maybe their moves are different, but the idea is similliar - floating eyeballs surrounded by electricity.

Also, in the first Rayman game there are platforms very similliar to the fruit platform from JJ2 (graphically). I'll throw some screenshots if I find/do any, 'cause I'm busy right now.
