Would you like to have all JJ2 on the same version?
For the purposes of this poll, it doesn't matter if we're talking about 1.23, 1.24, 1.25, or anything. Imagine that everyone who played JJ2 used the same version of JJ2, and could all join each other's servers. Would you mind?
EDIT: I'm not talking about any sort of filter. Just somehow, I dunno how, everyone used the same version. The idea behind this topic is to better quantify who is arguing against a single-version community for reasons of legality and practicality (I.E. patching everyone's games), and who is arguing against it on the basis of not wanting to associate with people from a different version, for whatever reasons, with no value judgement being passed thereon. |
No. (I wouldn't mind.)
|
The question is weirdly posed, since it suggest it would be by filtering the list server (which is a truly stupid idea).
|
The 1.23 players should start playing more on 1.24 but however not completely abandoning 1.23 if they don't want to. Simple as that.
|
Yes, it would be good, but I must note only versions up to 1.23 are sold worldwide. TSF (:lori: 1.24) is only sold in Europe. I used to have 1.23, but I lost the CD ,and when I got TSF, i figured out I couldn't anymore play with the guys I used to play with in 1.23. Also, 1.23 seems to be preferred in USA, whilst Europe moved to 1.24.
|
1.23 and HH98 were probably the only versions that ever saw the light of day for a short time here.
|
You mean splitting up the list servers? I don't see anything useful in that, because people with TSF are able to join a 1.23 game with that neat little program by Overlord...
|
Or more easily with a hex-edited .exe, such as TEC.exe
|
Why is everything about hex-editing?!?!

Sure if somehow someway everyone was using the same version, a one server listserver is good.
But this is not the case, so therefore I vote no. Especially since it really screws up my yearly tradition of hosting Xmas servers on HH98 |
I am not entirely sure what the question means by one-version server list, but when hosting a server I'd prefer it to be able to accept clients from both 1.23 and TSF (and all other versions).
|
Your question in the post and in the poll are different.
Answering the question in the poll: yes, having the community use a unifed version of JJ2 would be good. Note that I'm saying a unified version rather than specifically 1.23 or 1.24. Answering the question in the post: no, I don't mind, having not played online for over two years. Outright distribution of 1.24 is illegal, but if a patch appeared to make 1.23 compatible (regardless of if the patch fixes bugs or not), then I'd use it. |
What Torkell said.
|
I'm so confused about the poll. Does Yes mean that we don't want such a thing? (The question in your post and poll yes and no mean different things.)
Anyways, I would mind. It would mean less people playing my version probably, but many of those people don't even know how to run in the game. Let alone speak English. |
I think what he means is either releasing a 1.25 upgrade which sort of combines 1.23 and 1.24 or making a server/client program which lets all versions join all servers. Yes if you want that.
(Just my interpretation.) |
I don't really care. A 1 server list is a good idea. But I think that we should continue to use the versi0on we have right now.
|
Yes and No are determined by the poll, not the post. Sorry.
|
If we want to really ask this question it might be best to have a new poll where things are phrased so there is less confusion.
|
I don't understand the question. Please clarify by rephrasing the question or explain what each of the options mean more clearly.

Having a list server that displays all jj2 servers under a constant version ID (regardless of the version used) is a bad idea. Remember that you cannot always successfully join a server when your version is different. Take 1.23 and 1.24 for example. If you were to use 1.23 to join a 1.24 server that hosts a TSF level/tileset then you would get an error.
If you're speaking of a common version (sort of as if suddenly all different jj2 versions would get magically replaced by a common version such as 1.25 worldwide) then yes, that would bring the community together. It would be nice, but impossible to achieve. Still the best practical solution would be to use a kind of servers that can accept clients of any version and allow them to play a common game. |
Don't do anything to the server. Make a program that I suggested in the other topic.

I know this isn't the topic to discuss this. I just thought about this idea now and I felt like sharing it with others. :-) |
We have decided to use a forest + carrotade method for euro events. If you don't know, it means 1.23 and 1.24 players could participate.
|
Sasik, some people don't have 1.24 and won't just buy it for JDC if they aren't good players. And even the good players might not be able to get 1.24.
|
warez, for the love of god. warez
|
I'm assuming these people won't download warez.
|
thats silly of you.

I interpreted this post as "if the entire world have 1.23/1.24/whatever and used it as the standard JJ2, would you like it?"
Yeah. |

I meant recompiling on the fly the tilesets and levels which aren't too big.
|
Then why won't

And yes, J2NSM is all about stupid secret programs... like openjazz2 (not to mention major parts of mentioned program). |

I think the question roams down to what people prefer than what is the wisest and most beneficial decision. I don't think there's that many 1.23 players that couldn't access a TSF server if needed be, I simply think they choose not to because the expansion set was in itself kind of stupid and there wasn't much of a reason to stop playing on the same server as your friends did for the sake of a tile set increase and an unfunctional character that didn't even support proper customization.
That’s the problem with any online game that receives an expansion in same likeness. If you look at WarCraft 3, 30% of WC3’s battle.net games still occur on the original game. I don’t think it’s ever going to change because you can’t force people to play your preference. |
To be fair, TSF also changes how powered-up ice works. :)
