Jazz 3D Fan-clone! Coming soon!

Oh, well, almost everyone knows JJ3 (the 3D jazz game), it didn't get never ready.
If you don't know, please visit HERE.

Many fans waited for it, but no, it didn't get ready,
so I wanted create my own 3D Jazz game!

So, now I'm making the "Jazz 3D Fan-clone",
it is unofficial, three dimensional, freeware fan-game.

The graphic isn't best possible, but still playable game when it get's ready.

And a screenshot:

Fella familiar, Labrat...

WORK IN PROGRESS:

characters
Jazz (35% ready, animation almost works...)
There will be also Lori and Spaz and all old guys!

Enemies
none yet!

levels
Labrat (40%, you saw the screen, did you?)
More coming...

other
Camera (100%, works, at last...)
Landscape materials (30%, mainly good, but needs bit more different pieces.)
3D graphics (99%, it looks well, but is done with geometric shapes...)
Fastires (100%, they work! Wuzzaah!)

What engine are you designing this in? Are there pictures available? Video available? Have you done any prior work in 3D design?

Is there anything besides statistics that you can tell us about your fan game?

Jerrythabest Aug 6, 2007 08:00 AM

Whoa another Jazz 3D game! I'd suggest everyone who's working on Jazz 3D games should start working together, maybe we actually get somewhere then too... ;p

Anyway, before I continue to talk this project to death, I'd like some more information too... maybe it's not so bad after all.

TheKax Aug 6, 2007 09:12 AM

Oh, well, it works in 3D, but animations and graphics are still bit rough (for example, Jazz' legs doesn't move while he walks to left!)

The engine is custom engine, made with GML-programming language.
I'll get soon a beta, when I finish the so-simple labrat-level...

Jerrythabest Aug 6, 2007 09:41 AM

IMO (as far as I have one) custom engines are good, as they are made to suit the needs of the game. So that's good. As for those legs, just put him in a wheelchair then.

sonicnathan 1 Aug 6, 2007 09:59 AM

Ok. I think we should just let ambosesoftware make jazz 3. There a real company and they already got everything planned. I'd much rather play a game from a real company than a fan. (no afence.)

By representing every minority we can achieve total political correctness! We'd also have to make Spaz black and Lori a lesbian, though.

Anyway, interested in how this turns out. GML... are you using 3D models or 2D sprites?

Jerrythabest Aug 6, 2007 11:25 AM

Umm... I wonder what you would get if you make a 3D game with 2D sprites :/

Wolfenstein 3D?

Jerrythabest Aug 6, 2007 01:22 PM

What's that? Did they really make a 3D game with 2D sprites? :o

Torkell Aug 6, 2007 01:40 PM

There's been quite a few games that did this. The Darwinians in Darwinia were sprites. In Mario Kart 64, the tracks were full 3D but the karts and items were pre-rendered sprites. Even recent games use sprites for some graphical optimisations (usually pickups and vegetation).

Have you ever played any game from before 1996?

Jerrythabest Aug 6, 2007 02:43 PM

Umm dont know exactly, don't know the dates of the games I played ;p

ShadeJackrabbit Aug 6, 2007 02:53 PM

Doom, Heretic, Nightmare 3D, Quake, Hexen...

Radium Aug 6, 2007 10:15 PM

Jazz1 Bonus Levels...

Seriously, though, you had to have at least played Doom before.

Violet CLM Aug 7, 2007 01:50 AM

Sonic X-Treme was a pretty interesting example of sprites in 2D, IMO.

Um, this uses 2D sprites... :o
Sry...

It really is 3D platformer, made with GML, as there aren't many 3D platforms made with it.

As soon as I get my upload-thing work, you will find the first screen shot in first post!

EDIT: screen added. go to top or click here

Jerrythabest Aug 7, 2007 03:59 AM

Doesn't look too bad... but Jazz looks a bit stretched. The 2D sprite looks rather funny in the big 3D world ;p

Stretched?
Yes he looks.
I fixed it. :)
In the game, not in screen, though.

Making the carrotus look... I mean Carrotus look Carrotus! Look good... I mean...

ShadeJackrabbit Aug 8, 2007 01:54 PM

Sorry, Quake actually had models, but Hexen didn't.

As for the screen-shot, are you looking for a Sonic 3D Robo-Blast II look? If so, the Jazz sprite looks too stretched vertically.

Jerrythabest Aug 8, 2007 02:08 PM

Btw I like the "Enemies: none yet!" in the first post. Peace, man.

Jazz has yet to majorly (-) anyone off, but it'll happen.

Valco Aug 8, 2007 03:45 PM

Of all the people to make this, I wouldn't expect Kax.

Duke nukem 3D, Strife, Redneck Rampage, Blood, Deus Ex, Whacky Wheels, Ultima Underworld, Ultima Underworld 2, System Shock, Terminal Velocity, that 3d maze in the windows screensavers...

Slaz Aug 9, 2007 10:38 PM

But seriously, isn't this just another one of those 'attempts' to make a new Jazz? You do realize how much work it is even with more experienced people in your team. Also, the game won't be that succesfull without finding a publisher, the original developers had cancelled the game because of that. And since this is a fan game, it won't be popular enough to make Jazz3Online or something like that. I still have some hope in AmbeSoftware though, because it's a real company and if their version of the game becomes great, they may just be able to find a publisher!

Or it could be, you know, a fangame.

Slaz Aug 10, 2007 07:18 AM

It wouldn't be a good idea to make a fangame and call it Jazz3D.

Jerrythabest Aug 10, 2007 07:36 AM

It wouldn't be a good idea to make a normal game and call it Jazz3D either. Legal stuff, remember.

Puffie40 Aug 10, 2007 09:06 AM

The link for your screenshot no longer works. May I suggest www.maj.com or Picturetrail for your pictures?

Jerrythabest Aug 10, 2007 09:32 AM

Or Imageshack

Marijn Aug 10, 2007 10:20 AM

little oftopic: MARIO KART n64 USED 2D SPRITES!! YEAH!!

Ow.. On the other hand! Just show your screenshots because there IS no Jazz 3d so everything is better than nothing :)
Dont worry much about materials of meshes because if you able to show a little demo I am sure a lot of people want to help :D

Slaz Aug 10, 2007 10:19 PM

Better check http://jazz3.ambesoftware.com for the best revival of Jazz3 ever in developement! I've nothing against this fangame either, may you can revive some ideas Baggers had with his fanclone?

Jerrythabest Aug 11, 2007 01:33 AM

I'm pretty sure it'll be implemented too when it is its time. I personally also know how to do games with GML (yeah, I knew Kax on a Game Maker forum before finding myself here), and since Game Maker has only a limited support for 3D games, and it's not the difficulty of "click, another click, done". I am personally really surprised about Kax making this game, I had underestimated him.

Go go, Kax GO! We're more than eagerly waiting for this game to be published!

I'm pretty interested too, while the image is down at least Kaz had more to show than ambesoftware has.
