bash 14

Perhaps a tad early, but it might be a good idea to discuss organization, levels etc early on.

Discuss bash 14 please.

Jgke Feb 14, 2012 11:41 AM

Post-Apocalyptic Office
I guess you'll be organizing it this time around too?

FireSworD Feb 14, 2012 11:46 AM

Honestly, I don't care, I might be involved in the organization though.

cooba Feb 14, 2012 12:19 PM

Really what I mostly want is a host who won't throw my level design out of the window with stupid settings like No Shields.

Love & Thunder Feb 14, 2012 12:48 PM

I'd like it to not use MP3 Music, because it does both of the following things:
1. Anyone without JJ2+ won't be able to play(For example: Me, people who do play Jazz, but don't go on any websites, or other people like me who have the LK Avalon version of TSF).
2.MP3s are not as good quality as most other formats, it's like the JPEG of Music Files.

and 3. Most music in levels are not MP3s, so there isn't much point in converting any music or re-exporting it or anything.

Apart from that, I just hope that old community members like Xion who have disappeared from the community come back, even if it's only for a few days, or indeed 1 day.
:)

EDIT: I've found a way to get around this, so please ignore this post.

cooba Feb 14, 2012 02:55 PM

Robo: you could just not download the MP3 files when the pack goes up.

Other points aside, you do realize how many tracker songs have ridiculously low quality samples? Among them many well-respected classics.

PT32 Feb 14, 2012 04:15 PM

If you don't want bad songs, then don't use bad songs.

And only play levels that you yourself made.

minmay Feb 15, 2012 04:20 PM

I'd like Jailbreak to be included. It works best with large numbers of players and has a lot of bash-worthy levels. Other JJ2+ gamemodes are worth considering too, of course (I think the last bash had Domination?), but this one seems like a particularly good choice.

List of Battles I suggest:

OvC 20 - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...ompetitors-20/
OLC Battle Pack 2 (x7) - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...c-battle-pack/
Asinine Armory - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...armory-collab/
Rural Mountains - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...ral-mountains/
Peculiar Purple Peak - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...r-purple-peak/
Atlantis Cathedral - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...tis-cathedral/
and NAV levels if they ever get finished...

And here's the CTFs I suggest:
Death Star - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6902/death-star/
Heat Shrine - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...3-heat-shrine/
Dungeon Paradise - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...geon-paradise/

Frontier Falls - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...rontier-falls/
Dead Meadow - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6728/dead-meadow/
Fukushima - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6717/fukushima/
Proteus - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6701/proteus/
A 2-nd level CTF Pack (x2) - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...evel-ctf-pack/
The Pit - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6671/the-pit/
Space Cheesecake - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads...ce-cheesecake/
DarkZone - http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6614/
and NAV levels if they get released.

Atop of these I suggest looking at Impressions A which contains elements of both lists.

FireSworD Feb 15, 2012 06:55 PM

Battle1 - Not a "high quality" level but I think it's suited for bash (remembrance of battle1). It's like one of those "fun" levels (bobo meets royalty etc).

Alliance may not have been the most well received pack of levels, but I think some of them are worth consideration in case filler is needed.

ROFL. Minmay, you're shameless, and you're devious. I laughed so hard when I read your post, especially after having just seen your most recent Featured Upload on J2O.

What impeccable timing. Sure, I'll nominate your pack.

I know this was released last year, but I don't recall it being a part of the bash last year. Definitely one to consider, if it wasn't.

The example level for Scorpio Key is a great fit for the bash IMO, in the same vein as other Violet levels.

Has anyone actually tested this statement, as in, played it in an MP server over a decent period of time? Because in my experience in SP and as an unjoinable host, the generating rotating rocks never go away, and I have no idea how that interacts with a public server.

I didn't forget that my pack existed or anything, but I was more motivated by the nature of the gamemode itself - there are plenty of great Jailbreak levels by other people. Check out BlurredD's pack (doesn't seem to be on J2O yet, but the filenames are JB[whatever]) and the many single levels.

Also, if you didn't notice, I did make that post before the pack was featured (and honestly I wasn't expecting it to be).

They appear for the host only as far as I could tell.

Bit of an inside joke, I guess. No reflection whatsoever upon you. ;)

FireSworD Feb 22, 2012 01:30 PM

Well, bash 14 looks really bright so far. I've tried to get FawFul to organize bash, but he doesn't seem like the most reliable person afaik. Whichever the case, who's up for organizing bash 14? - If no one takes it up, then I'll have to organize bash again.

Lithium Feb 22, 2012 01:47 PM

Just asking, what does the organizer have to do?

FawFul Feb 22, 2012 01:58 PM

Sorry for the late response, Yeah FS did contact me and i was unsure at first because i'm often busy with different things, but then i accepted later on. I maybe not look like very reliable because i have weeks where i have a lot of time and weeks where i don't. (at this moment, i am in one of those weeks i am very busy). On the other hand i have a week vacation next week so i'll be having plenty of time then.

I'm not sure if i should organise it, not that I think i can't do it, or can't make it in time, but that people should expect and be aware I am definitly not always there. I have no idea what the commnunity expects from the organiser, so. As said, i'll have weeks i could work on this a lot and weeks where i can't do anything at all. I'm not sure if it's unreliable, but more like barely flexible. On the other hand, i really don't want to miss this oppurtunity.

Ok so let's get this stuff started

I contacted FS again and we decided I will organise it (with some help by FS) this year. Since there hasn't been any objections on this we think it's fine.

So what will this mean?

This means that I respectfully want to ask anyone to come up with some levels for bash 14. This is your moment to advice levels for the bash in this thread. That includes, in case you want to, giving levels made by yourself. This also means that you still have time before the deadline of 9 April (when the anniversary actually is) to make levels and give them here. In the meantime till 9 April, I will be updating a list of Battle and CTF. (try to finish your levels before 6 April though, otherwise you risk there is not enough time left or bash already started in the weekend)

No list before the very last list (probably given of Battle/Ctf is definitive. This means that there can still be levels scrapped and added in the meantime, but it should give an idea of what the list overall should look like.

Also keep in mind that the bash should have an okay quality, this maybe sounds like a harsh rule for a game anniversary, but it has always been this way that having a level in the bash is some sort of achievement. Of course, this will also depend on the amount of (good) levels.
But overall, High quality levels have more chance of staying in the list than low quality levels when it's full. To make things clear: The pack is not about everyone having atleast one or more level in.

When there is a bunch of levels given i will try to make an early list up as soon as possible. Good luck to everyone that still feels like JCSin', remember there is still more than a month to work on a level :P.

I forgot to mention that levels should be on the internet (preferably j2o) in order to get in the bash

I think, if you read further up this thread, you'll find that a great many people have already started submitting potential candidates for the bash, so why not start with some of those?

In any event, I will capitalize on the opportunity and nominate Fawful's Frontier Falls and ALEX4u's Lost Flag for the bash. Both are good CTFs, and both should be here.

Not that I'm self-nominating it...but my Death Star level would look pretty nice with an "abash14" prefix...Hint hint...

Not necessarily levels from this point are the only candidates. It's not really nominating though from this point on, it's more to give an idea of what levels i might forget if people would not help reminding me to it. But yeah, it also gives an idea of what people would like to see in the bash.

minmay Feb 28, 2012 06:18 PM

Intercity Grudge Match is my nomination for battle. It's just a cool level in general, and big enough.

Maybe not clear to everyone but the bash should mainly consist of levels over the past year. There will eventually be some classics in the bash aside from that, but i want to avoid using levels from other years. (Especially not intercity grudge match because it was in the bash before). Eventually these levels get added, but as fillers.

cooba Feb 29, 2012 07:15 AM

Someone has to post the obvious:

- all of olcbat2
- OvC 20
- Scorpio Key

For some reason I thought the upload was from 2011 when I made that post :drugs:

DarkSonic Mar 1, 2012 02:54 AM

@Rag: you mentioned a lot of levels but I'm surprised you didn't mention Tidal Towers which is the only Battle level from IA that hasn't been in the Bash yet. And well, This level is.. gold! GOLD! didn't get into the Bash because I already had enough levels in the Bash when I organized it, but it's still fairly new to some people and thus it could be considered to put that in too.

By the way, I have been doing other stuff lately so I didn't JCS. I'm not sure if I will be able to make something for the Bash either.

1. I recall you having 1.23, just use that with plus instead, even that is better than using LK avalon. It's likely the levels will be 1.23 compatible. Now if I knew you weren't all "Oh but downloading it is illegal!" I would tell you just to download the real TSF because I belive it's okay to download abandonware, as the people aren't making money off it anymore so I don't see why they'd care. I honestly don't give a fly if I get banned for saying that because I barely post here anyways.

2. Not necessarily true. There are varying qualities of MP3s and there are a lot of great high quality ones out there, but it's really the size of the file that's the problem. They are significantly larger than tracker modules, and take quite a while to download directly from a server, which is my concern with them. Also like what DoubleGJ said, there are a lot of tracker modules which use low quality samples.

3. Ok this point is just ridiculous. Most people don't convert already smaller music pieces to MP3s for JJ2 levels. This is not the reason why people use MP3s into levels, they use it because it's the only music format that the song/tune/whatever it's in. Or in another case it can be converted to ogg (another plus only format), which can be slightly smaller but it usually doesn't make a huge difference. Also, so what if most levels aren't MP3s? While I try to avoid using them in MP for size reasons your statement is like saying "Oh so-and-so isn't used much so we shouldn't use it.".

TL;dr: Do your research.
