Question A little team

I don`t know if this is the appropiate place to ask this, but as this is about JCS, I thought I`d ask here:
HEY! Would anybody care for joining a team with me? I have uploaded one level EVER. And it is here. It needs improving, as you can clearly see, but I don`t know how to.

So, mods, please don`t lock this, but send it elsewhere if it is not appropiately placed.

If you want to join, PM me.(please). Or, of course, just reply here.

WARNING:
I have A B S O L U T E L Y NO experience. (Well, at least, 8 years of lvl-making, but what I mean is that I`m not VERY good.)

A lot of people upload a bunch of nonsense and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Rather ask someone rational to beta test your levels and whatnot before you consider uploading them.

Nonsense? My, nonsense?

Are you saying I uploaded nonsense? Or are you just saying that for future uploads?

I could help you, but the problem is, it's not Summer anymore, so I won't have as much time for JJ2ing. I'd reccomend adding people from this site to an instant messenger account like MSN, and showing them your levels as well to recieve feedback. You should never be afraid of people not liking your uploads, because most people will provide feedback on how to improve them. You should just use this feedback as a weapon and continuously make better levels. Practise makes perfect. But anyway, try beta-testing with other players. I haven't had time to check your level yet but I'll do it soon. ;s

Ok

Thanks. No, I`ll not have as much time either, maybe just in the weekends. And maybe even then I won`t have as much time...

Oh, right, that's when i'll be on. XD. Add the JJ2 contacts from this forum that disclose their MSN onto JCF if you think they appear to know their stuff about JCS.

I'm kind of interested. But don't despise me if I randomly leave for two weeks and then come back like "what are we doing now?" because that's just me.

I learned a lot from playing fun levels. Then opening them up with JCS and looking at how they were built. Like the extremely cool parts. I opened up the level with JCS and checked out how they did those cool parts so I could mimic something similar in my own levels.

I learned everything on my own with some slight help from blur. Only once, I used jcsref to help me with water in my levels. Other than that, you can learn a lot from other people.

Also, I've got a few tips if you're interested:
1) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put borders around your level. If there's no borders on certain sides, that is a bad sign because if that level is a CTF level and someone captures the flag and touches the outside of your level, all others will get flooded with "<player> captured the flag" messages until that player leaves or gets roasted.
2) Try and think up a particular and original concept for your level, that keeps it interesting for players.
3) Practice, practice, practice. As they say, practice makes perfect. If someone doesn't like your level, keep making levels because every time you make another level it will always be a little bit better than the ones you made before.
Trust me, I make levels ;P.
Those should help. Oh, and use a good, non-limiting tileset, because sometimes certain tilesets are VERY, and I should say VERY limiting.

Alternatively: use a limiting tileset and delimit it to high heaven.

Yeah, I discovered that too, now you mention it. (The practice, I mean).
My first level was this Damn tileset, and I wanted to cover up something using diffrent layers. I didn`t know ehat the speeds were at that time and every time I did something like that the parts just floated away if you moved.

But now, compared to my very first levels, I am pretty experienced!

Well, yeah, that`s fine, but the client would need JJ2+. And apparently 10000000 don`t have JJ2+, and only 100 do...

The problem with teams is the fact that unless the group can work together, it can fall apart. this is a good example IMO

Don't get me wrong, there are levelworking groups out there (OLC and XLM are two I know of) but I notice a lot of the levelmakers work solo, so grouping is not very common.

The best thing to do with your levels is get other players to play the level, and listen to their feedback. since the level you mentioned is multiplayer, this is easy: Host it!

If you let other players know that you are the author of the level and are interested in making it better, the regulars of the game won't turn down some time to critique the level.

Also, study other levels of the genre. They have little quirks that can help you design your levels.

Well, yeah. That`s the main problem... I WANT to host, but apparently I have to open some ports and I did with someone I trust a few years ago. All should be fine, but it`s not. I can`t host anymore, and I don`t think (s)he (yes, I`m NOT making ANYTHING about him/her public here) will want to do this with me again.

So I think hosting is impossible for me. That`s why I want to just post it on the site or make my team critisise it, so then I can know what else to do.

Yeah, teams fall apart. But for a team to fall apart, you`d first need a team to start of with. And those teams usually finish off like, 1 or maybe 3 projects before they fall. And it is precisely THOSE 3 projects that I`m going to wager on.
So, I`m giving it a try, and then I`ll see how it works out.

Despite what I said in this very topic (and other topics) I'm starting to consider a partner for my levelset project. (The plot/music/level ideas come nicely, I just seem to have a bad case of JCS-block)

Soooo, i guess I'm open to offers. Maybe someone to help do the JCS work for me :P
