Awesome level! Enjoyed playing it (hard mode)
Instructions/introduction were very clear.
Concept is creative and original, liked the metrovania-ish aspect of the level!
Very original! Enjoyed the level!
I liked the variety in the Lori enemies in terms of movement and weapons! Level design itself was cool too.
I kinda cheesed the boss(?), it kept spawning loris that jump in place that shoot rocks but I outranged them and simply stood still and kept shooting from afar.
Beautiful level with with great gameplay and many hidden secrets!
The first time I played this was in hard mode, it was challenging and the enemies are no joke (God those monkeys). One of the best levels I played for sure. The platforms’ creative effects and the waterfalls add up to the fun. Despite the level being kinda big, it never got repetitive and it kept getting better! It is also well balanced in difficulty: easy is truly easy and hard is truly hard, allowing players with different levels of skill to enjoy it.
Though there were some parts that I have complains about in hard mode:
The last part with the pumpkins: your screen is filled with enemies everywhere, the pumpkins are following you around and your adrenaline is high, you wanna get out of there ASAP, so it was easy to overlook that one special platform at the end that gets you out of there, instead i wasted my time to search for the exit in the water so the water in that part felt useless/misleading. I only noticed that platform when i replayed the level in easy mode (just to realize that i was at the very end when i lost in hard mode).
Some poles flew me straight to collide with enemies with no way to react.
I also agree with slaz about the airboard, I went there the first time without knowing that I needed an airboard to continue and got stuck. (Getting in, grabbing the airboard and getting out was also one of the most challenging parts)
All in all it remains a great level, download recommended!!!!
My most favorite level from Jelly Jam so far, the tileset is used creatively to create this ancient roman theme, the lake, the pillars, etc, with nice visuals overall. The level involves a nice mix of water and land, it has two power-ups under water which makes swimming in there fun and worthy. Plus you cannot stay underwater for too long since you have limited oxygen. Personally I’m not a huge fan of the pinball bumpers but I got used to them after a while, I guess.
Overall the level plays and flows well. Download recommended.
Where do I start, this pack is my favorite pack so far.
Here are my notes:
+The storyline is well done, with the levels having many surprises.
+The dialogues are hilarious and very well written. The dialogues and the storyline alone make the levels fun enough and worth playing .
+The levels, dialogues , names and the pack as a whole contain many genius references. You may find ones even in the most meticulous places.
+Many secret areas throughout the pack.
+Awesome new enemies, some of them are funny (I ROFL whenever I see the fat chick) and great bosses.
+Intriguing puzzles, you often have to play with switches, platforms and use physics to your favor, and sometimes think outside the box.
+AMAZING physics! Sometimes you will even wonder if this is JJ2.
+Some of the levels are Metroidvania styled.
+Beautiful looking levels and eyecandy.
+Cool score and enemy killing system.
+Unlike most SP levels, you have infinite lives here, and the enemies you defeated do not come back after death, making it more convenient to go back and forth. This favors less skilled players, the more you retry a certain part, the more you kill, the more it gets easier, the only price you pay is time.
+The levels have unique design, you don’t just stomp enemies and destroy trigger crates.
+Generally speaking, if you find yourself stuck anywhere, try looking around for any passages that you might have missed, or objects/items that you can use, play with the switches/platforms. Trust me, you will eventually always figure out a way :)
+Level 4 is a MASTERPIECE. (Make sure you dedicate at least 2 hours for it, or less… depending on how much you’re better than me I guess)
I don’t have any complaints, with all the eminent effort and details that went to this, I personally don’t see why I would rate it less than 10.
Obviously download recommended, duh xD
Yamato castle uses tiles from Captain Claw (and used excellently) which is an instant plus for me.
The music in the level is also great.
You have to collect 20 coins spread throughout the map and submit them to the judges in order to win. Took me some time but I eventually won (around 1 week before this review). The coin counter at the left upper corner is a nice addition. Carrots/food/gems were well placed throughout the map (thank god for that ICE PU).
Overall the layout and areas were fun and the visuals were a pleasure. The level isn’t easy but it’s worth giving it a shot.
But I’d like to list some WTF moments:
-There was only one coin which was inside a wall (next to a spinning spikeball) which I couldn’t figure out how to get without jjnowall/jjfly.
-At some point you will become a frog and the way to unfrog back (figured out after a couple of deaths) is to fall into a PIT that warps you to eva. What makes it worse is that the arrows (in the area where you play as a frog) point to the OPPOSITE direction of where that pit is located.
-There were 2 coins which when you got close to them the screen would show an IMMENSE annoying light
-I thought the sucker on top of the switch puzzle had anything to do with it, like having a trigger in it or something (the raven out there made it even worse)
-the boss is kinda WTF, mainly because of the camera, but I don’t blame a 10 year old level
The level seems fun at first, but I don’t like grinding and turning to a frog over and over, I didn’t like this as much as I like Stone Abyss levels, but i guess it’s just not my type.
I like every single bit of this level. The enemies are cool, the sonic loop stuff and the stuff that you cling to blew my mind. Not to mention the amazing boss with some cool physics. Tileset was great too. background might have been slightly distracting (it’s damn good) but it wasn’t a problem. One of my favorite single player levels ever.
I know it’s a pretty late review but here we go.
Intro: Intro is nice.
Level 01 cooba :
Overall a nice, fun and well designed level! The snowman, penguins are pretty cool. The level introduces us to Gift boxes which is a nice gimmick. The crystal shards area was pretty cool too. Checkpoints might have been spread out too far though.
Level 2 Jelly Jam, Level 3 Primpy,Level 5 Slaz:
Overall nice levels! There isnt something extremely super ultra mega remarkable around them (they all fell the “same” because of the lack of scripting), but they were fun and definitely an integral part of the pack.
Level 4 Blackraptor :
The level is very very visually pleasant, great eyecandy everywhere! It’s the most beautiful looking level in the pack.
But the tunnel part…
The goddamn tunnel part….
That was the biggest pain in the ENTIRE pack, I cant count how many times i failed that part. It was extremely confusing and non-intuitive, and the dark ambient lightning make it even harder. Even with a guide it still took me many tries to get past it.
The second part is nice, but it was difficult mainly due to the “death pits“and it was a bit confusing. (also the first part had some confusion factor too)
Level 6 PurpleJazz:
Best level in the pack without a doubt. Well designed and beautiful looking, literally EVERYTHING about this level is great. The boss is amazing too, but I didn’t even know about it until months later (apparently I inadvertently skipped the boss without knowing it even existed)
Level 7 ShadowGPW:
The level was generally good, but the difficulty comes from the spam of ravens. The level had way too many ravens, like, WAY too many ravens, so much ravens that it became an annoyance. So that’s a downside to the level.
Bossfight PurpleJazz:
Amazing bossfight, definitely one of the best bosses in JJ2. I personally find it pretty difficult (I reached the boss with little to no ammo) so I couldn’t really spam seekers or all that crap. The final phase is definitely brutal, he attacks so fast that when you go left to dodge his stuff, by the time you went right to the boss he already has started another attack so you either dodge all the time or you spam your weapons against the boss while getting rekt at the same time. So i had to endure a long fight with blaster and spam all my stuff at the end phase. All the attacks are cool and the boss animation/graphics are pretty damn good.
Overall I like this pack, lots of hard work went into it. Sure, it might have some flaws but I find that the good stuff in it overshadow them. I mean when was the last time we had a big collaboration pack? I would definitely LOVE to see another pack from the community, and hope that all levels include scripted enemies/gimmicks(PJ’s level is a perfect example)
Download recommended!
Fun levels, JJ1 tilesets and enemies give it a nice theme. Though I expected a second phase for the boss.
Cool level, challenging and enjoyable! Music is nice too. The hardest parts (and most annoying) for me were the slow swinging ball platforms as you’re most likely going to get knocked out to your doom by a bee or miss landing on it after detaching off the vine. Other than that, the level is very enjoyable. Download recommended!
The levels aren’t interesting, but I enjoyed Titanic Tube Tussle and Heck’s Pinball. They also have too much ammo/enemies piled together. I’d only recommend this pack for the final boss, as it’s one of the coolest bosses I’ve ever seen in JJ2! And thus the rating.
Cool level, I like the tileset and the music is lovely. Enjoyed the text strings and the gimmicks such as shooting the trigger crate with bouncer. The level isn’t linear which is cool gameplay-wise, but at some point i got lost and had to jjflyjjnowall somewhere. It also has some nice secrets. The boss is just… wtf?
A very atmospheric level with a cool background mixing rain and thunder , The level is big thanks to its width. Running from one base to another feels like a marathon, but the abundance of carrots compensate for that. Fireworks and its weapon placement are great, I also like how the Roller PU places you at a risk of drowning (If you’re slow)
Definitely one of the best levels using Tubeelec tileset, tunnel Background is cool, combined with the other eyecandy. Fireworks fits the layout pretty well (combined with the level theme) Layout is good. Fun level overall, download recommended.
Fun level, the middle area including the 2 carrots and the Pepperspray is cool especially when you fall from the top to the bottom. Though some “zigzag” areas (6 of them) are kinda bouncer biased
funny level and nice boss, I personally enjoyed it
As always, PJ shows us his skills in making a big battle map using a small tileset, Background and eyecandy are great. Flow is great which makes it easy to travel in. This level is bloody, gorish and intense. If you don’t get super ultra mega extreme insanely hyped when you play this level, I don’t know what will. Download recommended.
I’m going to briefly review each of the levels in this list:
Coagulation:
One of my favorite big-ctf-games level, aesthetically looking, especially the sun, the bases areas and mid-upper section are cool, and awesome music!
Sidewinder:
I like the tileset as it’s not used so often, eyecandy/BG is good. However I think it would be more fit to be a battle map rather than a CTF as the roads are kinda confusing for a CTF map and it gets easy to go astray.
Zanzibar:
Cool layout and theme, espiecally the ship in the background, the flying carrot and the pickups at the top are a nice addition too. Definitely one of my favorite CTF levels using this set.
Eden:
It has bubbles which automatically makes it a good map .A fast paced CTF level. Cool level theme, layout is great, would definitely play CTF matches here
Valhala:
A fun level for medium/big games, especially the bottom area. The stun gun is original and cool (but might irritate some sensitive players). Layout flows good.
Gephyrophobia:
A HUGE level, definitely fun to play in, you might get lost in its vastness, but it’s not a problem, since bubbles weapon fixes everything :)
Adrift:
A gloomy city, played many times here, recommended for large games, It’s good overall in terms of layout and eyecandy. Though I think the other battle levels in this pack are better than this one.
Riddleham Hope Hall:
A rainy castle surrounded by lakes. Fun level for medium sized games (possibly big too), I always like Castle themed levels, including this one of course. Water area is nice too.
Djibouti:
Definitely a unique level as it’s the only level I’ve ever seen with this tileset. Great layout, nice river at the background and the water at the bottom is pretty shiny.
Overall this is a great pack and it is clear that lots of work has been put into it. Download recommended.
Cool level, had fun playing here, espiecally because of the fact that the powerups respawn quickly. The coin warps here are one of the best that ive ever seen as I actually bother to hunt after the coins (unlike most other battle levels with coins)
The tileset is nice, colorful and rarely used which makes the level even more original
