mIRC is a popular chat program which is mainly used by video game players around the world.

In other game communities in the world almost all players are connected to its IRC channel, where they discuss with each other as well as arrange matches and sometimes find clans.. We aim to do the same with JJ2 now .

There are several IRC channels related in some way to the online Jazz Jackrabbit community. The most active is #jj2 at the QuakeNet network, but others are available too. A more comprehensive list can be found further down in this topic.

A small guide on how to connect to IRC and join #jj2:

How to use mIRC

1. Download mIRC, an IRC client, off http://www.mirc.com/
2. Install.
3. Run the program. Press continue. A window named "mIRC Options" will open - go to the "Connect" tab, fill your nickname, and also your full name, your email address and an alternative nickname, or at least just fill SOMETHING there. ;p
4. Go to "Connect" -> "Servers", choose Quakenet.
5. Go back to the "Connect" tab, click at "Connect to server".
6. Once you are connected to Quakenet a window will open, where you can set a list of favorite channels, and also join ones (e.g. #help). Simply enter "#jj2" in the text box and click "Join". You can also join it by clicking here once you have mIRC installed and configured.
7. To make idling easier: Click alt+o, go to "Display" -> "Options" -> "Tray", choose "Place mIRC in tray when minimized".

IRC may seem strange to you first. In case there's something you can't figure out or want to know more about there's the channel #help. You can join it as described above, or type "/join #help" in mIRC (followed by enter). People in #jj2 will generally be glad to help you if you're having problems too.

#jj2 is an old but active community related channel. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is not often discussed there. Generally, it's more of a meeting place for a part of the community than a channel about the game, although the game does get talked about. #jj2 is a good place to ask site-related questions since some of its admins often hang out there (Cooba, Stijn and FQuist for example for the site, and Torkell, Stijn and FQuist for the forums).

Other channels
#craccoclan is a large channel where part of the community, and a large part of the Cracco Clan hangs out.
#[tf], the channel for TF has a community following, too.
#j2nsm is a (passworded) channel for those interested in tweaking/hacking/improving the game. You should contact Grytolle for auditions, since you can't join without knowing the ultra hard to guess password. (hint: Highlight block to show spoiler: no no no no no no no no )

There's also #JCStalk, which is just slightly more active than #jazz2online (read: more users, but still no talking). Feel free to make these channels active!

Who clicks on channels in IRC anyway?

No one does. Except Freefull.

If you want the entire set of jj2 related channels though, I advice you do this:

Uhh my firefox opens irc links to mIRC automatically

also irssi is better if you're on linux or BSD or something

mice IRC or XChat Aqua are great for Mac OS X users. FYI. Pretty much along the lines of mIRC

I would recommend removing #jazzjackrabbit from this thread. No one visits there except for about four people who ignore it 99% of the time, and the occasional new player who reads this thread and assumes they'll find something there because its listed the most prominently. The channel doesn't even have any ops.

The channel is dead. It bugs me when people join it, see nothing, and leave. In #jj2 they'd at least have a better chance, even if the channel is mainly for off topic discussion. People do talk about jj2 in #jj2 if it's brought up, and nobody has a problem with talking about jj2 if they are interested.

I could make a new thread if necessary.

that "eich" is actually an abbreviation of "eigentlich", meaning actually, so it means "how big is your stick actually?" which, in the context of talking about disc space, makes this even naughtier though (!)

I'm not sure does anyone of active players use irc for chatting. Maybe some of them but it's a small number. Everyone uses MSN.

I miss using IRC!

Lots of them have MSN, Gadu Gadu or xfire but nothing like IRC anymore.. Ah, and don't forget the MSN group chat function which keeps clans together I guess.
